Lebron James in Trainwreck

Everybody get up now, it’s time to slam now! We got a real jam going down because we finally know the official title for the next Space Jam movie. The sequel in its current form has been in the works for over half a decade now, so it’s nice to finally know what to call this thing beyond the basic Space Jam 2… not that there would have been anything wrong with calling it that.

Star LeBron James announced the title himself with the following social media post:

In case you’re having trouble reading the mirrored logo on the basketball player’s hat, it reads Space Jam: A New Legacy. And if that isn’t official enough for you, the Space Jam Facebook page is now showing off the sequel’s logo as its new cover image, as you can see below.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is a rather fitting title. By the time it comes out, 25 years will have passed since the original Space Jam, which saw NBA legend Michael Jordan being recruited by the Looney Tunes to help them beat the Monstars in a basketball match. With Lebron James having cemented himself as one of the greatest players in NBA history, it’s only appropriate that he now gets to hit the court with the animated Warner Bros characters and help them out of their latest… predicament.

Although a Space Jam sequel had been discussed as early as 1997, the project didn’t really pick up steam until 2014, when it was announced that Lebron James would star. Filming finally kicked off towards the end of June 2019 and wrapped up the following September. Night School’s Malcolm D. Lee directed the feature, with Justin Lin and Terence Nance having previously been separately hired for helming duties and later exiting.

Naturally, just like with the original Space Jam, Space Jam: A New Legacy will feature plenty of Looney Tunes characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Lola Bunny. It’s also been rumored that characters from other Warner Bros properties will show up, but that has yet to be officially verified.

As for Lebron James’ live-action costars, they include Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green playing James’ wife and the MCU’s Don Cheadle reportedly playing the villain. Space Jam: A New Legacy will also follow in its predecessor’s footsteps by including cameos from other noteworthy NBA players, including Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, and Kyle Kuzma, as well as WNBA players Diana Taurasi, Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike.

Space Jam: A New Legacy opens in theaters on July 16, 2021, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more news on the sequel. Feel free to keep track of what’s hitting the silver screen later this year with our 2020 release schedule.

Interesting.

Too bad LBJ doesn't know how to flip the selfie camera to not take a mirror image. Lol.

I used to watch Space Jam when I was a kid (Even if i do hate sports) and I liked it. Might have to see this one when it comes out.
