According to The Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell, a new video game based on the legendary horror franchise is coming in 2021, likely for next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. The original Evil Dead released in 1981, and instantly turned its star, Bruce Campbell, into a cult icon. The actor would go on to star in the film's two sequels before making a cameo in the 2013 remake and reprising his role for three seasons of the Starz Original Series, Ash vs Evil Dead.

Following the conclusion of Ash vs Evil Dead, it was unclear if Campbell would ever reprise his role as Ash Williams again. At NYCC last year, Campbell said he would produce – but not star – in an upcoming franchise revival, which has since been titled Evil Dead Rise. However, Campbell did return as Ash in a DLC add-on for the asymmetrical horror game. Now, a long-rumored Evil Dead video game has apparently been confirmed by none other than Campbell himself.

In an interview with Diabolique Magazine, Campbell discussed a variety of topics, including his scheduled appearances at various gaming conventions in 2020, which he disclosed in his new book, The Cool Side of My Pillow. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the gaming conventions were all cancelled, but the game is real and continues to be worked on. According to Campbell, the game is scheduled for 2021, which suggests it will likely be a next-gen release if it's not a handheld or PC exclusive.

Campbell says the game was delayed because "Platforms change and evolve." Unless he's speaking very broadly, this suggests the Evil Dead video game was originally being developed for current-gen systems like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One before being moved to the upcoming next-gen machines. Details of the Evil Dead game are completely unknown. Will the game lean into the horror or comedy elements of the franchise? Will Sam Raimi be involved? The Evil Dead game is a complete mystery, save for the confirmation of Bruce Campbell's involvement.

The 2020 Electronic Entertainment Expo (better known as E3 2020) was cancelled, but many of the announcements scheduled to occur during the event have since been revealed over the summer, during events like Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. So far, the video game based on The Evil Dead has not been officially announced, but Bruce Campbell seems confident in its existence, having recorded dialogue for the as-yet unconfirmed title. If the game was delayed into 2021, it might not be announced until after the summer season ends. Even with the confirmation from Bruce Campbell, the new Evil Dead game is a huge question mark for fans of the franchise, but hopefully, the confusion will be cleared up soon.
