Tenet & New Mutants Have Already Been Pirated Online

Badly pirated versions of Tenet and New Mutants, the first two major blockbusters to be released in theaters in months, are already available online. Disney's X-Men film, the last one made by Fox before the studio was acquired by the media giant, was released both domestically and in international markets on the weekend, debuting to a modest, but pandemic-era record-breaking, $7 million in its first weekend. Tenet, on the other hand, was only released in international theaters in the past weekend, and will make its bow in the USA this coming week.

The two movies are the first major studio blockbusters to be released in theaters since the coronavirus pandemic shut down cinemas and film production worldwide. Unfortunately for fans who were eagerly aniticipating the long-delayed release of New Mutants, reviews have called it the worst X-Men film ever made, with average scores lower than those for 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Tenet, on the other hand, has debuted to mixed reviews, with some critics calling it confusing, but others saying its action and central concept are pulled off incredibly well. Christopher Nolan's latest did great business at the international box office, claiming over $53 million ahead of its debut stateside.

Now, Variety reports that both movies have already been pirated and are available online. There are reportedly two versions of Tenet available on Torrent sites, one with Korean subtitles and the other with German. The New Mutants, on the other hand, seems to have been recorded in the USA. All of the pirated movies are bad cams recorded on amateur filmmaking equipment or with cell phones, featuring bad sound and blurry visuals.

Warner Bros., the studio behind Tenet, has reportedly been trying to get the pirated versions of the film taken down, but hasn't succeeded. And with the movie opening in the USA in the next few days, the assumption is that new pirated versions without subtitles, will be uploaded soon. The fact that movies are being pirated shouldn't be surprising, given that it's been happening for years, but for studios, it is even more damaging now than in the past.

With major markets in the USA, such as New York and California, still enforcing the closure of cinemas, studios are releasing their movies to limited audiences. This in addition to the fact that many casual cinemagoers being unwilling to risk the possibility of contracting the coronavirus in order to watch a new release.

This could lead to more people seeking out pirated versions of movies, further cutting into studios' profits. However, it sounds like, for the moment at least, the pirates aren't managed to get their hands on good versions of Tenet or New Mutants, which will hopefully discourage fans from illegally downloading them. Depite this, as the pandemic lingers, and fans get more desperate to watch new movies, the risk of piracy will only increase.
