Star Wars: Obi-Wan Show Starts Filming Next Spring

Recommended Posts

Production on the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series is slated to begin next spring. Last year, it was confirmed that Ewan McGregor will reprise his fan-favorite Star Wars role as the Jedi Master in a Disney+ series. The project had been rumored for years, starting off as a film before it was re-evaluated to be a small-screen offering. Now, after a couple of more delays, filming finally nears.

Narrative details for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series are still scarce at the moment, but it has been confirmed to take place eight years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith. Flashbacks during the Clone Wars era are also rumored to be incorporated in it. Set to be a one-season limited series, fans are excited to learn about what the Jedi was up to at this point. Production for the project hasn't exactly gone smoothly, however, with Hossein Amani exiting the series due to story points that are deemed too similar to The Mandalorian. This led to Joby Harold replacing him to crack the narrative.

There's not many updates regarding the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but it seems like things are going well in terms of pre-production with McGregor confirming to Entertainment Tonight that they are scheduled to begin filming sometime next spring. The actor didn't get into specifics when exactly they're starting production, but he's noting but excited about the project. The actor also re-affirms Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy's previous comments about the show only being one season.

Originally, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was supposed to begin production last August. However, on the heels of the script issues, it was moved to January 2021. In hindsight, it really didn't matter whether or not the production start was pushed bad as the project still wouldn't be able to stick to its initial schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic. During this first delay, McGregor said that he doesn't think that it will affect that show's release date which is still unconfirmed at this point. With the latest reschedule, however, it's curious if there will be any changes to its Disney+ debut.

Of course, given the current status of the global pandemic, there's no guarantee that the Obi-Wan Kenobi show will make it to its current production start target date. While Marvel Studios' Disney+ show, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has restarted filming after suspending it due to the coronavirus health crisis, it can easily be shut down if infected cases rise again. Nevertheless, this update is an indication that things are going well in terms of crafting the show's story which is a good thing considering how Lucasfilm has had a string of problematic productions that led to disappointing projects over the last few years.
