The Croods 2 On Track To Beat Tenet's Opening Weekend At Box Office

After the box office numbers from Thanksgiving weekend were accounted for, it looks like Dreamworks' animated comedy-adventure film The Croods 2 is on track to out gross Tenet's domestic opening weekend. The film is a sequel to 2013's The Croods. The sequel had a troubling development, even being canceled by Dreamworks at one point. But, after the project was revived and had it's release delayed a handful of times, the film was finally released on November 25, 2020.

Now, as the box office numbers from The Croods 2 have come in (via The Wrap), it's looking like the animated film is set to out gross Christopher Nolan's Tenet. Nolan's film, not counting preview screenings, was estimated to make around $9.35 during it's opening weekend. The Croods 2 is set to bring in $9.7 million from it's three day opening weekend. Including additional days from the Thanksgiving holiday, it's box office take is around $14.2 million. If The Croods 2 continues on this trajectory, it will most likely out gross Tenet domestically.

Nolan's film was largely seen as a experiment, testing the waters to see if a profit could still be made by a theatrical release in the United States. It was mostly considered a failure. While The Croods 2's box office performance isn't great by normal standards, it's set to be the best performing domestic film since Onward (which itself wasn't even that big of a hit), which came out right before the pandemic was in full swing.
