Guillermo del Toro would love a Pacific Rim and Godzilla vs. Kong crossover. Over the last eight years, monster movies have made a cinematic comeback. From The Meg to Love and Monsters, there have been quite a few creature movies to enjoy. In two months, the biggest monster brawl of the century will occur when Kong trades blows with Godzilla.

Before Legendary crafted the MonsterVerse, Pacific Rim blasted into theaters in 2013. It was the first major American giant monster movie since Cloverfield. Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro, who many agreed was the perfect choice for the project. Del Toro brought a genuine passion for the kaiju genre, delivering unique creatures and stunning action scenes. While it did poorly domestically, it was a hit at the international box office. A year later, 2014's Godzilla stomped into theaters. Naturally, fans brought the franchises together in artwork and videos. One can easily see the MonsterVerse Godzilla standing alongside Gipsy Danger. Although it doesn't seem likely the characters will meet, del Toro is all for it. In fact, he loved the idea even before 2014's Godzilla was released.

Over on Twitter, Guillermo del Toro talked about Godzilla vs. Kong's trailer, expressing his desire to see the MonsterVerse and Pacific Rim universe brawl. Check out his Tweet below.

In Godzilla vs. Kong's trailer, there's a scene of the giant reptile roaring in a neon-lit city. For many viewers, this immediately brought to mind the Hong Kong battle in Pacific Rim. Hong Kong was the setting for Gipsy Danger's fight against Otachi, which featured distinctive neon lights. This made the fight all the more enjoyable and memorable. Whether an intentional or unintentional homage, it will be a treat seeing Godzilla stomp through the streets of a neon-lit backdrop.

If a crossover were to happen, it maybe could involve either Godzilla or a Jaeger falling into one or the other's universe. Timeline wise, they both can't exist on the same Earth, because Godzilla appearing in 2014 was the first time the modern world at large realized giant monsters lived among them. In 2018, Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight said he had an idea for a crossover with Kong and Godzilla, but it was up to Legendary. It would certainly be interesting if that idea came to fruition, but sadly it doesn't appear Pacific Rim is moving forward in film. It's up to fans to continue bringing the universes of Godzilla vs. Kong and Pacific Rim together.
