The Nevers Trailer Reveals Victorian-Era Superpowered Action

The full trailer for HBO Max's Victorian-era superhero show The Nevers teases intrigue, conflict, persecution, and a lot of action. The streaming series debuts on April 11 and stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Pip Torrens, and Nick Frost. Created by Joss Whedon, the showrunner for the first half of season 1 before exiting The Nevers citing exhaustion, the show follows a group of women in Victorian-era England who mysteriously gain special abilities.

Called "The Touched," these women find themselves ostracized from society for their differences, but their destiny seems to be tied directly to the fate of the world. Most of the plot details have been kept under wraps to build anticipation for the series, and the first teaser trailer for The Nevers introduced the setting and character's powers without revealing the full scope of what they face.

HBO released a full trailer that better displays how each of the characters fit into the show and how high the stakes are. The trailer reveals "The Touched" are trying to prevent some catastrophe that threatens the future of the world. They're also dealing with Torrens' villainous Lord Massen, who sees them and their powers as an insult to god. Frost's Declan Orrun is also set up as a foe, though he seems to have money as motivation. There's also lots of action and humor on display, with the footage playing like a bloody and surprisingly violently R-rated greatest hits of Whedon's previous TV shows like Buffy and Firefly, complete with sarcastic female leads. There's no doubting this is not your typical stuffy English drama set in Victorian times, taking a fantastical approach to the era and amping it up with some over-the-top action set pieces and a whole lot of blood and gore. Donnelly, best known for starring in Outlander seasons 1 to 3, shines as Amalia True, the show's lead whose power seems to be seeing into the future, as well as fighting her way out of any problems. There's also some screen time given to Ben Chaplin's Detective Frank Mundi, teasing him as a potential ally to Amalia and the rest of "The Touched" through the series.

As for Whedon, there's no mention of his involvement in the show, a smart move by HBO given the recent allegations around his abusive on-set nature, but his trademark style is all over this trailer. It's unclear how much input new showrunner Philippa Goslett had on the show's story, but she was there for production on the second half of season 1, and it will be interesting to see if there's a tonal shift in later episodes. The Nevers streams new episodes weekly on HBO Max from April 11.
