How To Set Bandwidth Limit On Windows 10 Update

There are two ways by which we can change the bandwidth limit; one via Settings and other via Group Policy Editor.

Method 1: Set Bandwidth Limit On Windows 10 Via Settings

To find the steps required to disable bandwidth limit on Windows 10, follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Press Windows logo + I button the keyboard to open Settings.

Step 2: Click on Update & Security. Scroll down to find Advanced options.

Step 3: At this window, click on the ‘Advanced options’ link.

Step 4: Choose Delivery Optimization and click on Advanced Options.

Step 5: Here, you can make changes in download and upload settings as per requirement. For example, under ‘Download Settings’, you can limit the bandwidth used for downloading updates in the background. It has been set up as 45% by default, and the slider can help you restrict bandwidth settings.

Step 6: Under ‘Upload Settings’, you can limit bandwidth for Windows update as and how required and Monthly upload limit. The slider is available for your assistance.

Step 7: Go to Delivery optimization once again and enable ‘Allow downloads from other PCs’. In case if you skip this step, none of the above steps is applicable, and you won’t be able to limit bandwidth for Windows update.

Method 2:  Set Bandwidth Limit On Windows 10 Via Group Policy Editor

If you are using Windows10 Pro or version 1703, the above method may not apply directly. However, Group policy editor makes it possible to use Windows 10 bandwidth limiter. For this method, follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Press Windows key + R at the same time on the keyboard and the Run command box will appear.

Step 2: Type gpedit.msc and click OK. This step will open the Local Group Policy Editor.

Step 3: Follow the path as mentioned. Computer configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Delivery Optimization.

Step 4: Double click on the option of ‘Maximum Download Bandwidth (percentage)’.

Step 5: Make sure to select the Enabled option. Enter the bandwidth limit manually or using the menu slider.

Step 6: Click Apply and then OK.

Step 7: Click on ‘Download Mode’ policy and select the Enabled option. In the drop-down menu of Download Mode, select your local network option and click Apply > OK.

Step 8: Another option mentioning ‘Max Upload Bandwidth‘ can be double-clicked for the required configuration. Please enable it and set the maximum upload bandwidth. After this, click on Apply > OK.

NOTE that if you wish to revert the changes, select Not Configured instead of Enabled.
