Channel association closes major pirated IPTV services

Recommended Posts

The International Coalition of Broadcasters Against Piracy (IBCAP) this week announced a move to close pirated IPTV services based in North America. According to the organization, the idea is to carry out coordinated lawsuits against different providers of this type of service, in a series of lawsuits that have already resulted in more than US $ 18 million in fines and indemnities, in addition to the closure of at least two platforms of the like in the past few months.

The most recent judicial victory of IBCAP, which represents more than 140 television stations around the world and, even, in Brazil, happened in the last week, with the closing of platforms simultaneously approved by the American justice. A federal court in the US state of Texas sentenced those responsible for the platforms to pay a total of $ 16.8 million for intentional copyright infringements, in addition to granting the transfer of 15 domains to coalition members, including that belonging to Free TV All, one of the largest pirated channel platforms operating in North America.

The lawsuit also follows a successful lawsuit against East IPTV, one of the largest global providers of irregular access to paid broadcasters. The decision, granted in February, resulted in indemnities of US $ 2.7 million to members of IBCAP, among amounts applied against the operator and also hosting services used by the service. Once again, the domains were transferred to Dish Network, an American company that operates the Pay TV platform via Internet.

More than 20 successful lawsuits against IPTV piracy in 5 years

According to the IBCAP statement, in total, there are already more than 20 successful lawsuits that have resulted in the closure of pirated IPTV platforms over the past five years, with more on the way. According to Chris Kuelling, executive director of the coalition, the processes apply not only to hosting and platforms themselves, but also to retailers that sell devices or their own irregular access to channels, as well as individuals who market this type of service.

Kuelling also compares the sale of such platforms with the sale of a defective product, since, with the closure of the platforms, customers are left without access to the channels and, also, without the subscription money paid to irregular suppliers. For the executive, it is also a matter of raising consumer awareness when making decisions about contracting services like this.

The actions are carried out after an online monitoring carried out by NAGRA, which specializes in security solutions for the entertainment market. From these systems, the coalition collects evidence of functioning and identifies those responsible for the practice of piracy, with legal action that leads to the closure of services and punishment of those responsible next.
