Godzilla Vs. Kong’s Fight Mixes Surprisingly Well with Iconic Shrek 2 Song

The climactic fight between the titular titans in Godzilla vs. Kong works surprisingly well with Shrek 2's iconic song, "Holding Out for a Hero." The latest entry in the hodgepodge MonsterVerse franchise, Godzilla vs. Kong, had fans excitedly debating which of the pair would win, long before it released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. In the film, Kong's handlers take him on a journey to his original home, which culminates in a conflict with a furious Godzilla. With impressive visual effects and big names filling out the world around the monsters, it's shaping up to be one of the most notable sequels in the franchise.

Shrek 2 is the direct sequel to DreamWorks' original film about an ogre who falls in love with a princess. After meeting Fiona's (Cameron Diaz) parents, who are upset to find that she is married to an ogre and permanently transformed into one herself, Shrek (Mike Myers) decides to change himself into the man she deserves by taking a potion to become a human being. In the film's climax, Shrek must storm the castle to reunite with Fiona, and races against the clock to the tune of "Holding Out for a Hero." Widely remembered as one of those rare sequels that surpasses the original, Shrek 2 has become a beloved classic.

Twitter user gus (@EmmArrGus) blended the two films by playing the rousing song over Godzilla and Kong's fight. The 17-year-old Australian artist usually posts his own original shark-based character designs, though he claims this editing departure came to him "on a whim." For two minutes, the titans duke it out to Jennifer Saunders' performance, leaving fans asking the same question as the video's creator. Check out the video below.

Truth be told, song and Kong mesh well. The exhilarating tune is inextricably linked in the memories of Shrek 2 fans to Shrek's heroism. When he first arrives at the castle, Shrek rides a giant gingerbread man (courtesy of the Muffin Man, who lives on Drury Lane) named Mongo. The short-lived cookie makes the ultimate sacrifice when he's submerged in boiling milk. Though he had little screen time, Mongo begs for the audience's sympathy, much like the heroic Kong does in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Though the pop-rock anthem doesn't appear on its face to match the tone of the titans' conflict, to be compared to Shrek 2 is a great compliment, especially among the generation that grew up loving the film. Shrek 2 far outstripped its predecessor at the box office, and Godzilla vs. Kong looks to be earning quite well itself. Godzilla vs. Kong and Shrek 2 really don't have anything in common, but the mashup should be funny to Shrek and MonsterVerse fans alike.
