Wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista has expressed interest in playing the DC Extended Universe's Lobo. Bautista has transitioned from WWE superstar wrestler to actor with major roles in films like Blade Runner 2049 and Stuber and will next be seen in Zack Snyder's newest movie Army of the Dead. However, his most famous role is arguably Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Lobo was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in the pages of Omega Man #3 in 1983. The character saw a resurgence in the 1990s as anti-hero characters like Wolverine, the Punisher, and Cable became more popular. Lobo has been a featured player in many DC Comics and has appeared in a number of shows including Superman: The Animated Series, Young Justice, and Krypton, where a Lobo spinoff series was being developed before the show's cancellation.

During an interview at Justice Con while promoting Army of the Dead, Bautista was asked by a fan what DC character he would like to play. Bautista responded with Bane first before mentioning Lobo, saying he would be interested in bringing that character to life. He is throwing his name out there for consideration and letting Warner Bros. know Lobo is someone he would enjoy playing. Bautista respond:

I would really take a look at Lobo. I'd really be interested. I'd be all over that.

Bautista putting his name out there for Lobo makes sense given the character has had a movie in development for some time. Back in 2009, Guy Ritchie was working on a Lobo film but left the project a year later for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Before signing on to the role of Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson was in talks to play Lobo in a movie based around the character from director Brad Peyton. Most recently in 2018, it was revealed DC was looking at Transformers director Michael Bay for a Lobo film. However, as of now, none of those projects have come to fruition.

While Bautista is a major part of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, there is no rule that says he couldn't also take a job as a DC character. Guardians director James Gunn is currently working on The Suicide Squad and its spinoff series Peacemaker before returning to the MCU. Given that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could wrap up the storyline for the main Guardians, Bautista's time in the MCU may almost be over anyway. That would free up the actor's availability. With the balance of power expected to shift in the DCEU with the arrival of Black Adam, adding another wrestler turned actor as a major DC heavy hitter like Lobo could lead to some epic smackdowns in the future.
