Godzilla vs. Kong Gets An Asylum Mockbuster With Ape vs. Monster Trailer

The Asylum is back with a trailer for its latest mockbuster, Ape vs. Monster, this time cashing in on Godzilla vs. Kong. It has been one month since the MonsterVerse showdown's international release. Worldwide, Godzilla vs. Kong has done nothing but impress at the box office. In less than a month, it surpassed the global gross of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and now sits at over $400 million.

The term "mockbuster" refers to movies that purposely emulate bigger films with the intent to capitalize. The most notable company of these kinds of releases is easily The Asylum. It's been in business for over 20 years, never failing to put out features capitalizing on notable Hollywood releases. Certainly, one must give The Asylum credit for its clever titles, such as Atlantic Rim and Transmorphers. Another example is 2008's The Day the Earth Stopped, which of course is capitalizing on The Keanu Reeves-starring The Day the Earth Stood Still. Despite the majority of The Asylum's work being panned, the films do have an audience, perhaps by fooling unsuspecting viewers with its titles. Either way, the movies do well enough for the company to keep on releasing.

Godzilla vs. Kong better watch out, because The Asylum is here with its next release. Ingeniously titled Ape vs. Monster, the movie features a showdown of two creatures in Washington D.C. The film's logo even mimics Godzilla vs. Kong's. Ape vs. Monster features Eric Roberts in the cast. Check out the trailer (via Kaiju News Outlet) below.

The giant lizard actually has a good design, with the CGI looking particularly impressive in the nighttime shot. Interestingly, the film seems to be taking a cue from Rampage as well, with the creatures being exposed to something causing them to grow large. No release date has been given for Ape vs. Monster yet. Those interested in watching are likely hoping it's better than Monster Island, the 2019 Asylum movie capitalizing on Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

With Godzilla vs. Kong leaving HBO Max at the end of April, perhaps Ape vs. Monster can fill the kaiju void if it releases sooner than later. Based on the trailer, the mockbuster could be a fun Saturday afternoon watch. Of course, it remains to be seen if it will be an enjoyable B-movie or something that's not even so bad it's good, like Alien vs. Hunter. Although nothing will beat Godzilla shooting a hole to the Hollow Earth, it could be a treat seeing an ape climb the Washington Monument.
