Zack Snyder’s Favorite Batsuit is From The Dark Knight Returns

Zack Snyder's favorite Batsuit is the one from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. In March, the director released his long-awaited movie Zack Snyder's Justice League to HBO Max. The realization of Snyder's original vision for the 2017 film, his cut has been praised by many for its more complete narrative. It features a significantly different and darker ending teasing Snyder's once-planned Justice League sequels. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. and DC have no intention of making those movies, viewing the Snyder Cut as the end of the director's DC Extended Universe story.

Snyder's work in the DCEU was influenced in part by The Dark Knight Returns, especially Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Miller's 1986 miniseries is one of the most iconic comic book stories of all time. It also had a huge effect on future portrayals of Batman, including in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Snyder has long expressed his admiration for Miller's work, even saying he would like to make a movie adaptation of the The Dark Knight Returns at some point.

During the Deep Dive Into Zack Snyder's Justice League With Zack Snyder panel at Justice Con, Snyder was asked to name his favorite Batsuit of all time. Surprising few, he immediately mentioned the suit from The Dark Knight Returns:

My favorite Batsuit is Dark Knight Returns. You know, basically Miller's Batsuit...if I were to make that movie, I would make that suit exactly. And also, there was a guy, there was a cosplayer who cosplays that suit really well, I saw the other day on my feed. I forget his name. But he's an older gentleman, and he does an incredible, he's kind of a big guy, he does a great Dark Knight Returns. Really got the suit nailed, it looks really good. I'm like, clearly the suit can work.

In the same way Miller's story is considered one of the most iconic Batman comics of all time, his Batsuit is similarly revered by many. In the same panel, Snyder acknowledged the similarities between Ben Affleck's Batsuit and the one from The Dark Knight Returns. It's a popular choice, and one that has clearly inspired the look of Affleck's Batman.

Based on Snyder's answer and one particular scene from the Justice League Snyder Cut, it's clear his appreciation for The Dark Knight Returns isn't going away any time soon. At the conclusion of Zack Snyder's Justice League, Batman can be seen standing on top of a tank-like Batmobile very similar to the one from Miller's miniseries. The Mutant gang can also be seen in front of the vehicle, another reference to The Dark Knight Returns.

It remains to be seen if Zack Snyder will ever be able to do a faithful adaptation of Miller's work. There's certainly interest on the director's part, though it would be a bit unusual for a filmmaker to revisit a character in this way. At the very least, Snyder's work in the DCEU honors the iconic Batman story.
