Zack Snyder Feared WB Would Sue Him For Supporting Snyder Cut Campaign

Justice League director Zack Snyder admits he thought Warner Bros. would sue him for supporting the Release the Snyder Cut movement. It might be a reality now, but there was a time when the Justice League Snyder Cut was far from a sure thing. As one of the primary architects of the DCEU, Snyder started out as the director of the franchise's first Justice League. It was part of his overarching plan for the DCEU. However, due to a family tragedy, he departed the film midway through production. Warner Bros. brought in Joss Whedon, who ultimately changed much of what Snyder had planned.

When the theatrical Justice League failed to resonate with audiences, the Release the Snyder Cut movement began. Fans campaigned WB to release Snyder's original version of the movie, doing everything from mounting billboards to trending hashtags to get the studio's attention. The movement gradually gained support from those who worked on Justice League, including Cyborg actor Ray Fisher. Snyder himself soon joined the others and repeatedly teased his cut of the film by sharing images and story tidbits. Eventually, Warner Bros. greenlit the release of the Snyder Cut; Zack Snyder's Justice League premiered on HBO Max in March.

Now Snyder is turning towards his Netflix film Army of the Dead, but he's still reflecting on his Justice League journey. In a new interview with The Times, Snyder recalled his concerns that he would get in trouble for supporting the Release the Snyder Cut movement. After all, it was a campaign that was frequently moving against WB, and he had contracts with them. "I was more worried the studio would sue me. Do something to silence me," Snyder said.

Needless to say, that did not happen. Instead, Warner Bros. eventually saw the benefit of releasing Snyder's Justice League and sent it to their burgeoning streaming service. Though the studio might not have been pleased with Snyder's initial support, he might have also given the movement some legitimacy. Before, there was a question of whether the mythical Snyder Cut even existed. However, once Snyder confirmed it, the fans who were pushing for its release gained a major advantage. It was the Release the Snyder Cut campaign that convinced WB, and Snyder's support helped increase the it.

Now fans are turning their sights to the so-called SnyderVerse, or the entirety of Snyder's five-movie DCEU arc. Justice League was only supposed to be part 3, with two more installments coming afterwards. Currently, there are no plans for Snyder to see those movies through, and he himself has shared his doubts about it ever happening. However, fans continue to push the hashtag, and they likely won't be giving up any time soon. It remains to be seen if WB will ever change their mind, but they have once before. Who knows what the future holds?
