Universal Pictures has decided to move the release date of their female-led spy thriller, The 355, up one week to January 7, 2022. This comes after the film saw a delayed release from January 2021 to January 14, 2022, due to the COVID pandemic. The film was announced in 2018 with an all-star cast featuring Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Bingbing Fan, Diane Kruger, and Lupita Nyong’o, along with Édgar Ramirez and Sebastian Stan. It has since completed filming, and a trailer has been released to give fans an exciting look at the film.

Universal Pictures shifted the release date of The 355, moving it up a week to January 7th, which allows fans to see the film sooner, though no official reason for the move was cited. The film is directed by Simon Kinberg and also produced by Kinberg, Jessica Chastain, and Kelly Carmichael. According to the synopsis for the film, provided by Universal Pictures, the film will see "a dream team of formidable female stars come together in a hard-driving original approach to the globe-trotting espionage genre in The 355."

While a single week isn't a big change in the release plans of The 355, it's great to see studios moving up release dates rather than pushing them back or even making bold moves like Warner Bros. did with their HBO Max deal. January isn't usually seen as a month for blockbusters, but with the ever-shifting state of film distribution and audiences still feeling reluctant to return to the cineplex, it's harder to say when and how a film will achieve success, especially in the eyes of the studio.  The film looks to bring a fresh female voice to the world of spy thrillers, which are predominantly male-led with the likes of the Jason Bourne films, the Mission: Impossible franchise, and James Bond.
