Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an assassin in Kate movie first look images. Winstead portrayed the crossbow-wielding killer Huntress in Birds of Prey, and must’ve really enjoyed the experience of taking lives on screen, because she’s next set to star as an assassin Netflix’s Kate.

But Kate is not in fact just a run of the mill assassin movie. The twist this time is that Winstead’s titular Kate learns while on a job in Tokyo that she has been injected with poison, giving her just 24 hours to live. Being an assassin, Kate sets out to find the person who poisoned her and kill them before her own ticking clock runs out. Winstead is joined in the movie’s cast by Woody Harrelson, who plays Kate’s handler. The film also stars Japanese actor and musician Miyavi, along with Miku Martineau, Tadanobu Asano, Michiel Huisman, and Jun Kunimura. It’s directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (The Huntsman: Winter's War) from a script credited to Umair Aleem (Extraction).

Netflix plans to release Kate worldwide in fall of 2021 but audiences can get an early taste via some first look images from EW. As the pictures show, things get pretty rough and bloody for Winstead’s character as she races against the clock to find her own killer (not a surprise for a movie written by the same person who penned the wildly violent Extraction). See the images in the space below:

As if the ticking clock working against her character weren’t enough, Winstead reveals that Kate sees her assassin being joined by an unlikely ally who changes the stakes. As Winstead herself explained, “Along the way, [Kate] forges this bond with this teenage girl named Ani (Miku Martineau), and they end up taking on this mission together. It's a heartfelt, brutal, assassin story!"

Winstead is obviously no stranger to action after starring alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the aforementioned Birds of Prey. But though Winstead's Huntress was certainly a memorable character in that movie, she was very much placed in a supporting role to Quinn. Kate however sees Winstead taking the driver’s seat in a very female-centric film that sounds like it will be loaded with lots of action and violence. The handful of first look images featured above certainly show Winstead looking cool and angry and ready to take some lives as she seeks to take down the person who poisoned her. The ticking clock element should indeed give the film extra suspense. It will be interesting also to see how the character of Ani changes the mix as Kate goes about her bloody business. Fans of female assassin movies certainly have a lot to look forward to thanks to Netflix, as Kate is joined on their roster of upcoming releases by the Karen Gillan-led assassin film Gunpowder Milkshake.
