Italian police take down '80%' of country's illegal IPTV services

Italy’s state police said they successfully dismantled an IPTV network responsible for around 80 percent of illegal IPTV services in the country. The macro-operation – dubbed Operazione Black Out – involved 200 specialists across 11 regions (Catania, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Bari, Naples, Ancona, Rome, Cagliari, Milan, Florence and Venice) and was coordinated by the Catania District Prosecutor’s Office. The pirate network streamed content from official providers including Sky, Dazn, Mediaset and Netflix to some 1.5 million subscribers that together generated revenues of around EUR 15 million a month, said the police.

The illegal streams were available to users who paid an average of EUR 10 a week after acquiring pirate devices, known as “pezzotti”, from a network of retailers and resellers. Around 45 people are currently under investigation for various offenses and hardware plus “tens of thousands” of euros have been seized from the homes of suspects in connection with the illegal activity.
