Palpatine Didn't Erase One Jedi Legacy

Palpatine may have done his best to destroy the legacy of the Jedi in Star Wars - but there was one legacy even he didn't erase. When the Emperor rose to power in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, he considered it the ultimate triumph of the Sith. He framed the Jedi as the orchestrators of the Clone Wars, releasing recordings that suggested the Jedi had attempted to overthrow the Republic itself.

The citizens of the Empire initially celebrated, believing the Emperor's lies and propaganda. Over the next 20 years, Darth Vader and his Inquisitors scoured the galaxy searching for survivors of Order 66. Meanwhile, the Emperor himself carefully destroyed all records of the Jedi, aiming to make it impossible for the Order to ever be revived. But Lucasfilm's transmedia initiative, Star Wars: The High Republic, has revealed there was one legacy of the Jedi the Emperor did not erase.

Bacta is the ultimate "one size fits all" medicine, a liquid that can heal concussions, internal organs, and cracked ribs. Small amounts of bacta are placed on minor injuries, and the most heavily injured are submerged in bacta to heal their bodies, as seen in The Empire Strikes Back. It was discovered when the Jedi and the Republic pressed on into the Outer Rim during the High Republic Era, with a form of barley called Vratixia renanicus serving as the key ingredient. This strain of barley was initially grown on the agricultural planet Hetzal Prime - and it was only secured with the help of the Jedi.

Charles Soule's Light of the Jedi reveals the Great Disaster that almost destroyed Hetzal Prime. A hyperspace disaster led to chunks of a freighter emerging from hyperspace at just under light speed, with one such piece almost crashing into the system's star and triggering a supernova. Luckily, and just in time, the Jedi combined their powers to redirect the fragments, saving the entire system and ensuring the first bacta cultivations were given a chance to grow. According to Cavan Scott's The Rising Storm, if not for the Jedi's actions at Heztal Prime, the galaxy would never have known the medicinal wonder of bacta.

Bacta is the antithesis of everything the Sith ever stood for, a living organism that preserves life and heals the wounded. The Empire do appear to have shunned the use of bacta, although Darth Vader routinely submerged himself in bacta in the hopes it could restore his broken body. He likely had no idea of bacta's history, of the fact he was turning to a Jedi legacy in order to try to heal himself. And, appropriately enough, without bacta Luke Skywalker would never have survived the events of The Empire Strikes Back - and the Empire would never have fallen. Two hundred years after the Great Disaster, this last legacy of the Jedi brought the Empire down.
