Jack Dylan Grazer says that Shazam! Fury of the Gods represents his shot at redemption. Grazer was among the leads of the 2019 comic book movie Shazam!, portraying Freddy Freeman. The film, which was directed by David F. Sandberg, was part of the DC Extended Universe and it followed the teenaged Billy Baston (Asher Angel). Gaining the ability to transform into the adult version of himself (played by Zachary Levi), Billy works together with his foster brother Freddy to stop a dangerous threat. Along the way, he also learns to be accepted by his new family.

Shazam! was a hit among critics and audiences, with a sequel getting a greenlight shortly after the debut of the first film. The sequel, titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and directed by Sandberg, will see Levi, Angel, and Grazer returning to reprise their roles. They’ll be joined by other returning Shazam! stars, alongside new cast members such as Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler. With filming currently underway on Shazam 2, after delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Grazer admits that he’s looking forward to the chance for redemption.

During an interview with NME to promote his movie Don’t Tell A Soul, Grazer opened up about the fact that he wasn’t satisfied with his performance in Shazam! Noting that he was eager to play Freddy again and getting a chance to do things differently, the actor referred to the sequel as his “shot at redemption.” You can read Grazer’s quote below:-

“I walked out of the premiere and was like, ‘Ugh, I want to be Freddy again – there are so many things I could have said better or made funnier’. This is like my shot at redemption, almost.”

Grazer’s comments demonstrate how performers can, at times, be their own harshest detractors. In many of the reviews discussing Shazam!, Grazer was singled out as a particular bright spot. The actor’s chemistry with both Angel and Levi was discussed, noting that the bond between the two foster brothers provided the lighthearted movie with much of its emotional core. Grazer was also praised for perfectly embodying the cadence and style of Adam Brody, who appears in a cameo as the adult version of Freddy. And, most importantly, throughout the DC Comics adaptation, Freddy serves as a point of identification. Grazer nails how badly his character wants to be a superhero and, in the same vein, putting on a brave face while dealing with disability and bullying. It makes the Superman tease at the end of the movie all the sweeter.

It’s worth noting, however, that Grazer has branched out since he first took on the role of Freddy. The actor recently headlined the HBO limited series We Are Who We Are, sharing the lead with newcomer Jordan Kristine Seamón. In the drama, directed by Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino, Grazer showed new depths and vulnerabilities that he likely hopes to weave into his portrayal when he returns for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Hopefully, he’ll get the chance.
