Fear Street Director Has Ideas For Sequels

Writer/director Leigh Janiak said that she has plenty of ideas for more Fear Street movies. Before being adapted as a show on Netflix, the story originated as a book series by R.L. Stine. The original publication ran from 1989-1999. It would ultimately be revived in 2014, with the series still ongoing. The streaming giant brought their adaptation to their service over the course of a trilogy.

Netflix made the series into a weekly event, where a new entry was released each week. It started with Fear Street Part 1: 1994 on July 2, followed by Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and ended with Fear Street Part Three: 1666 on July 16. While each installment takes place within a different time period, they all tell the story of people being terrorized by a witch's curse that won't stop until it has claimed its victims. However, given the ending of the final film, the door has been left open for another Fear Street sequel.

In an interview with Collider, Janiak explained how there are still ideas around making more Fear Street content. She spoke about the Humpty Dumpty killer, who is teased in the first entry, although audiences don't get any more of him. Janiak went a bit more into detail on the idea behind this intimidating killer. She assured that this isn't the end of the concepts that have been generated behind the scenes. See below for her comments:

“I love the Humpty Dumpty killer! He was in the original script. I put him in there and I kind of had this really interesting backstory that I started thinking about, about a guy that was killing people and taking their body parts and making new people out of them. Like sewing things together, like Humpty Dumpty putting things back together again. And then I just didn’t quite know what era it made sense for him to live in and what it was, and I was kind of like secretly, there’s a lot to have happen here. Maybe we’ll deal with this in another movie.”

“Oh, no, no, no. We have ideas. We have ideas.”

The Fear Street trilogy hasn't been shy about the influences that it draws upon from other horror films. In the case of Part Two: 1978, it even filmed at the same camp location as one of the Friday the 13th sequels. Perhaps one of the ideas that Janiak is referring to includes a way to fit the Humpty Dumpty killer into a particular time period that makes sense. It's reminiscent of a more twisted version of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, although there would be more than one.

The format of releasing one film per week has certainly benefited Netflix's Fear Street. It has been the talk of the town and has been getting a lot of traction on social media, as people have been looking forward to the next installment each week. There's no doubt that the streaming giant would certainly like to continue the series, given its positive reception. While Netflix doesn't release their viewership numbers, these films have regularly been reaching the top 10 list. Stay tuned for more information from this horror adaptation. Until then, all three films are currently streaming on Netflix.
