Unconfirmed reports that the upcoming Assassin's Creed Infinity will be a live-service game have gained traction after Ubisoft hinted at both the game's story and business model during a recent investor call. While the Assassin's Creed series started as single-player adventures, the games have included more online elements in recent years.

Assassin's Creed Infinity was officially announced earlier this month, with rumors claiming the title will be live-service and offer multiple Assassin's Creed settings for players to explore. As well as offering different historical worlds, reports claimed the title would also receive additional add-ons, with plans for further expansions similar to games like GTA Online or Fortnite in the future. While unconfirmed, the news was met with mixed reception from fans of the longstanding series. Live-service games are often criticized for common problems that come with online-only titles, such as server overloads or game instability. GaaS (games as a service) titles also usually have a heavy reliance on microtransactions which can quickly increase the price of a video game, something which Ubisoft has been criticized for with AC Vahalla.

Publishing its earnings for its fiscal first quarter of the 2021-22 year, ending June 30, Ubisoft reaffirmed Assassin's Creed's aim to provide "high quality" narrative experiences but did not confirm whether Infinity will be live-service. However, as noted by video game analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter, the company did say that the AC franchise has been moving towards a live-service model for some time, with AC Valhalla and AC Odyssey breaking records. Although story details for Infinity are yet to be revealed, Ubisoft did tease the upcoming release will stay true to its roots, implying gamers won't see too much deviation when it comes to Infinity's narrative. Ubisoft promised more details on the "exciting and ambitious" Assassin's Creed Infinity in the future.

Ubisoft issued a statement following the leak of Assassin's Creed Infinity earlier this month, confirming that the game is real, though the company neither confirmed nor denied claims of it being live-service. Ubisoft gave minimal details on the project, though it did reveal that the "Infinity" title is a codename and not the final name of the game. The company also shared that the game is in early development, with further news on the project coming sometime in the future.

While Ubisoft's investor call comments don't confirm Assassin's Creed Infinity will be live-service, its mention of previous games in the series moving closer to the model does suggest that's where the franchise is heading. Until more news is revealed, players are left to speculate on everything from the true name of Assassin's Creed Infinity to when it might get an official gameplay reveal.
