One Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD player may have found a reference to another game in the series, Twilight Princess. The possible shout-out comes in the form of some architecture located in Sky Keep, one of the final dungeons in the game. However, it may just be a coincidence.

Nintendo published two Zelda titles on the Wii: Twilight Princess (which also appeared on the GameCube) and Skyward Sword. Much of Twilight Princess' motion controls, particularly pointer controls, were refined and reused for Skyward Sword. Various other elements, like character proportions, are also shared between titles. Even some dungeon themes were repurposed. Skyward Sword's Sky Keep is similar to the City in the Sky from its predecessor.

Reddit user GavinTFI posted a video, comparing part of Skyward Sword's Sky Keep to Twilight Princess' jail. Namely, both feature a spiral staircase that requires Link to jump across gaps. At the top of both staircases is a door to the next room. The similarities are obvious - the gaps are approximately the same size and the doors have the same location. Even the length of the remaining stairs seems to be a match. There are a few key differences. The most obvious of these is that, while Link is able to traverse the stairs just fine in Skyward Sword, Midna needs to assist Wolf Link in Twilight Princess. The lighting and overall aesthetic are also vastly different. One commenter suggested that the stairway was ripped from one game, reskinned, and ported to the other. This is merely speculation as of now.

While it's not a confirmed reference - the idea of crossing gaps in a stairway is nothing new - it wouldn't be out of place for Zelda. The franchise is known for including small nods and Easter eggs to past titles. Breath of the Wild in particular is chock-full of shout-outs and references, especially in the names of locations and side quests.

Skyward Sword was a dramatic departure from the more serious tone of Twilight Princess, but much of the latter's game design philosophy was shared with the successor. Unfortunately, there's no way for fans to know for certain. Regardless, it's still a fun reminder of one of the most iconic moments in Twilight Princess. Seeing as Skyward Sword is the first game chronologically, however, maybe it's more accurate to say that Twilight Princess referenced it, instead.
