Black Adam Movie’s PG-13 Rating Won’t Limit Its Kill Count Says Producer

Black Adam’s PG-13 rating won’t detract any from the eponymous antihero’s kill count, according to the film’s producer. Starring Dwayne Johnson in his DCEU debut as the fearsome Black Adam, the upcoming film has promised to shift the power balance within the universe of the franchise forever, setting up a character strong enough to possibly even rival Superman himself. Black Adam is currently scheduled to release in theaters on July 29, 2022.

Because DC and Warner Bros. have started exploring the realm of R-rated superhero stories with films like Joker and The Suicide Squad, some fans expected a similar rating for Black Adam. When it was announced that the movie would instead only be rated PG-13, there were those in the fanbase who expressed disappointment that Johnson’s Black Adam would be restricted somewhat in his displays of power. However, according to those working on the film, that shouldn’t be a concern.

Speaking recently with Collider, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia said that the film’s PG-13 rating wouldn’t put any restrictions on the antihero’s body count, and that the film was able to achieve an unfiltered version of Black Adam without treading into R territory. “There are lots of people that may start alive in a Black Adam movie and may not be there at the end of the movie,” Garcia said, promising an unbridled journey for Johnson’s character. “This will be PG-13, but it’s not because we're being forced to be PG-13. The way we devised the movie, it just wasn't necessary to make it R, and it's something we discussed because we did want to be true to the character. The truth is that we felt we were properly able to represent the edge and power that Black Adam has without needing to go to an R rating. This movie can thrive in a PG-13 space and that’s great for us because we want to introduce Back Adam to as many people as possible.

“No one ever felt like The Dark Knight was too soft. That was probably one of the hardest PG-13s you've ever seen. That's the way we’ve approached our PG-13, and by no means has that rating limited our kill count!”

Of course, the appeal of making Black Adam accessible for younger viewers is also undeniable for a massive studio like Warner Bros. Johnson has become one of the biggest and most popular stars in the world over the past few years, and Black Adam could become his biggest vehicle yet if it pans out the way fans hope. From the outside, the film seems like a perfect match of character and actor, and given Johnson’s appeal with all different demographics, cutting off anyone under 17 would be a big hit to the film’s box office potential.

That’s an even bigger consideration when looking at the DCEU’s recent past. The franchise has had more misses than hits since it started with Man of Steel, and though things have been trending in an upward direction lately, DC still seems like its trying to find its footing. Many of the stars who kicked off the franchise are either gone are scattered to unconnected solo films, leaving no clear foundation to tie it all together. Johnson is the kind of star who could potentially put the DCEU on his back, but that will depend on the response to Black Adam.
