As the stay-at-home bonuses in Pokémon GO continue to be rolled back, fans are voicing their grievances about the removal of these features. These features helped make the game more playable during a dark period for many players around the world by allowing more Pokémon catching from the comfort of players' homes.

2020 was Pokémon GO's most financially successful year for a variety of reasons. The stay-at-home benefits implemented at the start of the pandemic helped make the game more accessible during a time period in which everyone was forced to stay inside. These benefits included being able to use remote raid passes for raid battles, incenses causing Pokémon to appear more frequently without having to go outside, PokéStop and gym distance increasing to allow players to reach them more easily, increased buddy gifts, and other bonuses. These stay-at-home bonuses along with the Pokémon GO Fest helped the game earn even more profits than its peak during its launch in 2016.

However, as of August 1st, the exploration-related bonuses will be stripped from Pokémon GO. This includes bonuses related to incenses, PokéStop and gym distances, and buddy gifts. As a result, fans have taken issue with the removal of these features. On the Pokémon GO subreddit, user ilikethisnow notes that the pandemic still isn't over yet and that the removal of these features will hurt the game. According to a report from Dexerto, other fans have also stated they're considering quitting the game due to the rollback.

These features have been slowly rolled back over the course of the past year ever since September 2020, which has made many fans upset. The first features to be rolled back included reverting the distance to hatch eggs back to normal, which would require more walking outside. This was controversial last year due to the pandemic being worse than that it is now, but even on a gameplay level, the removal of these features brought criticism for making the game less accessible for those that want to stay inside.

It's for these reasons that the reception to this rollback has been negative from the fanbase. Pokémon GO has been under fire in 2021 for reasons such as this as well as the game becoming increasingly more pay to win. While these rollbacks won't kill the game, taking away options that made the game more accessible to players that live in areas with a lack of PokéStops does have the potential to hurt its lifespan in the long run. These bonuses were well appreciated while they lasted, so seeing them disappear from Pokémon GO is a disappointment to many.
