Over the weekend, Pete Davidson hosted free showings of The Suicide Squad out in Staten Island. While fans wait for word on whether or not Davidson is returning to Saturday Night Live in season 47, they can catch him on the big screen in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Davidson makes his DCEU debut in the film, where he plays bumbling Task Force X member Blackguard. He's just one part of The Suicide Squad's wide-ranging cast, which also includes Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena, and Joel Kinnaman.

The Suicide Squad acts as a cross between a sequel and a reboot. While not directly connecting to the events of 2016's Suicide Squad, Gunn's movie retains some of the characters from that much-maligned effort. The 2021 film sees the disparate and morally gray Task Force X embark on a daring mission on the fictional island of Corto Maltese. This past weekend, The Suicide Squad debuted in theaters and on HBO Max, and as the glowing reviews have all promised, it's even more wildly unhinged and violent than the previous installment.

To celebrate The Suicide Squad's release, Davidson brought the love home to Staten Island on Saturday. According to SI Live, Davidson bought out the 7:20pm and 8:00pm showings at the Atrium Stadium Cinema and gave away all the tickets. All fans had to do was arrive at the box office and say they were "friends of Pete." Theater owner Gregg Scarola told the outlet:

“It was all Pete’s idea, he reached out to us saying he wanted to give back to the community. This is a type of movie that has to been seen on the big screen. We have our best screens and auditoriums ready to go.

“He grew up in this community and it means a lot for him to reach out to us — a local theater — not just a chain. Not enough has been said about what he does for the community, he’s a really cool guy.”

Davidson has always been a supporter of Staten Island, even as he makes fun of it constantly on SNL. His last cinematic offering was 2020's The King of Staten Island, a dramedy from Judd Apatow. It's sweet that he brought his newest movie to his hometown and ensured that everyone who wanted to see it could. The Suicide Squad is the perfect movie to watch with a happy crowd, and the Saturday night showings were surely a lot of fun.

Despite all the positive buzz that followed The Suicide Squad into its opening, it came in below expectations at the box office by earning $26.5 million. This isn't taking into account those who watched the movie on HBO Max, as it was available for free and Warner Bros. doesn't release streaming figures. Those who saw The Suicide Squad this weekend certainly seemed to enjoy it, with the movie so far scoring an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. That perhaps speaks well to its enduring legacy, which will surely remember the movie as one of the DCEU's boldest.
