Mass Effect Player Makes Shameful Confession About Grenades

One unknowing Mass Effect player admits to having misunderstood how grenades worked in the first game, which led to them not using the important explosives in later playthroughs. Commander Shepard has plenty of weapons in their arsenal as they battle against the Reapers across all three installments of Bioware’s massively popular sci-fi RPG series, from Mass Effect's precious grenades to assault rifles that fire incendiary rounds.

The mechanics of those grenades in Mass Effect were one of the many gameplay aspects that were changed between entries, and they recently got one more update when the series was remastered for modern consoles in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition collection. While grenades in the first Mass Effect were equipped as a standalone weapon that any squad member could use, they were made an ability only certain characters possessed in Mass Effect 2 and 3 - including Commander Shepard. This isn’t the only eccentricity surrounding grenades in the Mass Effect series, as one player discovered during a playthrough of Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

Reddit user Lynchy- made a "shameful confession" to the Mass Effect subreddit, revealing they thought the grenades in the original Mass Effect could only detonate on a 10-second delay, when they actually are intended to be set off remotely with a second button press well before the timer is up. As a result, Lynchy assumed grenades simply “sucked” and never used them again. That is, until they discovered their mistake while replaying the first Mass Effect in the Legendary Edition remaster trilogy. On the bright side, they joke that they now have “new content” to enjoy on future playthroughs.

As noted above, players new and old are jumping back into the epic sci-fi game saga thanks to the remasters, and Mass Effect Legendary Edition sold better than expected by EA since its launch in May. While most of the three games featured in the Legendary Edition weren't completely overhauled, BioWare made plenty of quality-of-life improvements to address fan complaints, such as adjusting the Mako’s notoriously bumpy controls in the original Mass Effect and updating Quarian squadmate Tali’s face reveal in Mass Effect 3.

Fans are always discovering new and interesting things while replaying the Mass Effect series, from unused alien race concept art to tongue-in-cheek references to other media franchises. However, Lynchy’s belated discovery of how grenades work in the first Mass Effect game is a bit more personally impactful than most, especially when considering how those forsaken grenades would have come in handy when facing off against swarms of Husks.
