Actress Florence Pugh has shared a first-look photo of the upcoming Netflix psychological thriller The Wonder. The 25-year-old English actress made her debut in the 2014 mystery-drama The Falling alongside Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams. She has since gone on to star in major roles like Amy March in Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women and Yelena Belova in Marvel's Black Widow, directed by Cate Shortland. Pugh will also play the lead role in The Wonder.

Filming is now underway for The Wonder, set in The Irish Midlands in the mid-19th century. Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman) will direct the adaptation of Emma Donoghue's (Room) novel, which centers around 11-year-old Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy), a girl who stops eating but somehow manages to stay alive and healthy. A young nurse named Lib Wright (Pugh) travels to her small village in Ireland at the behest of a journalist to observe the child. When Wright arrives, it isn't clear whether she has stumbled on a miracle, or if there is something much more sinister at play.

Pugh has shared a first-look image of the upcoming film on Instagram. While not giving away too much, the photo does provide a strong first impression of Pugh's character, Lib Wright, and a glimpse into the film's gloomy setting of the 1860s Irish countryside. In the caption for the post, Pugh shared her excitement about what she says is a "beautiful and exciting film" that is off to a "magnificent" start to filming.

Per Deadline, The Wonder cast also includes Tom Burke (Mank, War & Peace), Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Hunger Games), Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves, Wrath of Man) as well as many more English and Irish stars. Donoghue's novel, the inspiration for the film, is based on the famous historical phenomenon of "fasting girls" during the Victorian era. The Wonder is due to be released sometime in 2022.

After featuring as a Marvel action hero in Black Widow earlier this year, The Wonder takes Pugh back to her roots in period drama. The parts that she has become most well-known for, including her roles in Little Women, Midsommar, King Lear and Lady Macbeth, largely fall into this category. And while Pugh has more than proven that her range is wider than the period genre, it is impossible to deny how well the actress suits this type of film. No doubt The Wonder will prove yet another example of her natural talent for adopting characters like Lib Wright when it hit screens next year.
