Sebastian Stan Responds To Anthony Mackie Captain America 4 Casting News

Sebastian Stan responds to the news that Anthony Mackie has reportedly closed a deal to officially star in Captain America 4. Stan made his debut as James “Bucky” Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. As the best friend of Steve Rogers aka Captain America, Bucky joined the latter’s Howling Commandos before plummeting hundreds of feet from a train.

In 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky was revealed to be alive but not well as Hydra’s brainwashed Winter Soldier. In that same film, Anthony Mackie made his MCU debut as Sam Wilson aka the Falcon, who formed a close bond with Steve before uncovering a government conspiracy involving SHIELD, Hydra, and the Winter Soldier. Sam and the partially-reformed Bucky served as supporting characters until Phase 4’s second Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Following Steve passing his shield to Sam in Avengers: Endgame, the series explored Sam taking on the mantle of Captain America, Bucky truly reconciling his past as the Winter Soldier, and the pair working together to stop the Flag-Smashers and a faux “Cap.” Not long after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier aired its finale, reports surfaced that Captain America 4 was in development and, now, it’s been confirmed that Mackie has signed a deal to star as its titular character.

Stan recently responded to the news of his friend and co-worker’s casting in Captain America 4. The actors shared Deadline’s report on his Instagram story with the caption, “HELL.YES.” Check out a screenshot of his story below:

It’s unclear whether Stan will reprise his role as Bucky in the untitled fourth Captain America film. However, considering the popularity of the Sam/Bucky dynamic in their Disney+ series, it seems likely he’ll appear in at least a supporting capacity. Both Mackie and Stan have expressed interest in playing their respective roles for as long as possible, and, with Phase 4’s slate seemingly full, it might be a while before audiences see the release of Captain America 4.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner, Malcolm Spellman, and Dalan Musson are supposedly writing a script for Captain America 4. Details for the film are characteristically being kept under wraps, but it’s clear that Marvel Studios aims to continue plot threads started in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and relate them to the larger MCU. That said, with the third Disney+ series, Loki, unraveling the MCU multiverse and setting up multiple Kang variants, Captain America and Bucky (the White Wolf?) will presumably have their hands full.
