The Ascent’s First Major Update Seems To Have Introduced More Bugs

The first major update for The Ascent has been released, but it seems to have made the game even more buggy than before. The Ascent is a twin-stick shooter that was released near the end of July, bringing players into a futuristic sci-fi world alone or in teams of up to four. While The Ascent is a stylish twin-stick shooter praised for its RPG elements and graphics, the shooter is under fire for suffering a myriad of bugs on release.

When the game first came out, players experienced random dips in the framerate and, even worse, a broken multiplayer mode that didn't work at all for a lot of players. The developers have just released a major update for the game that sought to fix these issues and more, such as stopping errors that would cause save file corruption. The update also added ray-tracing for PC players. However, this patch seems to have only made the issues even worse.

Update 2.1.4 was released for players last Thursday. According to the patch notes, it was supposed to improve co-op stability, stop save file corruptions, and fix broken quests. Instead, as reported by Kotaku, many players are experiencing even more problems than they had before the update. Players have reported random wipes of the "cyberdeck" slot or even entire characters. New framerate issues even worse than before have also been reported, making the game unplayable for some. Rampant crashing and bugged achievements have also been identified as problems now plaguing the latest addition to Xbox Game Pass.

A lot of these problems, surprisingly, are happening on both the PC and Xbox versions of the game indiscriminately. Players are hoping for a speedy release of a new patch to fix these issues, and while developer Neon Giant has said it's aware of the problems on The Ascent's Twitter page, there has been no word on a release date for a patch.

This isn't nearly the first multiplayer game to release in a buggy state in recent years, furthering a trend of games being released without proper testing and bug fixes. This abundance of issues is especially jarring because The Ascent was already delayed out of the Xbox Series X launch window before it released last month. All players can hope for is a speedy patch for the game and, if the stars are aligned, a fix for the corrupted characters without having to start The Ascent over from the beginning.
