Sweet Girl 2: Isabela Merced Wants to Make a Sequel

Following on the heels of Sweet Girl's premiere on Netflix, Isabela Merced wants to make a sequel. Sweet Girl, starring Merced and Jason Momoa, hit Netflix on August 20, 2021. The thriller film follows Ray Cooper (Momoa) in his quest for justice after a pharmaceutical company propels his wife's death by taking a potentially life-saving drug off of the market. Following Cooper in his quest is his teenage daughter, Rachel (Merced). While the film received poor critical reception due to its predictable and cliché plot, both Merced and Momoa boasted appealing performances. Momoa gave a compelling emotional performance, while Merced showed the makings of a true heroine with her confidence and determination.

In an interview with ComingSoon, Merced revealed that she is interested in making a Sweet Girl sequel. Merced was filled with praise for the stunt team that she and Momoa worked with for the film. The team, 87eleven, has worked on numerous action films, and Merced was thrilled to find herself having similar experiences to some of her favorite action film actresses. While she doesn't know if there will be a sequel, she strongly hopes there is one considering the enjoyment she found in working with 87eleven and performing her own stunts. [I’m playing] empowered characters only. It was so much fun because they got to do a lot of the action scenes and I’ve always loved action movies. This stunt team in particular, they’re called 87eleven and they worked on some of my favorite action movies of all times. So I really felt like, ‘Oh my God, I’m Charlize. Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde.’ Like this is actually happening. It was amazing. I can’t wait. Like maybe there’s going to be a sequel, hopefully there’s time for more action. But like I really hope it’s soon and with the same stunt team, because they were just absolutely amazing and made everything so much fun. I haven’t had so much fun doing my own stunts ever.

It is encouraging that Merced has such positive feelings and excitement towards her role in Sweet Girl, considering it was a bit outside of her typical roles. Growing up on Nickelodeon, then starring in films such as Instant Family and Dora and the Lost City of Gold, much of her work has been on family-friendly content and comedies. However, her role in this action film and the undertaking of her own stunts truly illustrate her potential in other film genres. Both Merced and Momoa's roles in Sweet Girl were different from what they are accustomed to, and it illustrates their talent that they undertook and succeeded at the challenge. Even if a Sweet Girl 2 doesn't occur, we are likely to see more of Merced as she continues to rise as an actress.
