In an exciting moment for airplane connoisseurs, Microsoft Flight Simulator has announced a new competitive multiplayer racing mode. The popular flight simulator, launched in August 2020, puts players behind the wheel of a plane and allows them to go practically anywhere. Microsoft Flight Simulator was recently released on Xbox, giving brand-new players an opportunity to experience the previously PC-exclusive sky experience.

By using artificial intelligence to simulate the topography of the entire Earth, Microsoft Flight Simulator allows players to fly anywhere in the entire world. Coupled with realistic controls and airplane physics, this makes the simulation game an extremely accurate portrayal of how it feels to be a real-life pilot. However, the game's geography generation technology is not perfect, so many parts of the world were initially left with little detail. Thankfully developer Asobo Studio has been working to fix this issue by adding additional detail to some of Microsoft Flight Simulator's most iconic locations. A recent update focused on Norway, Denmark and other Nordic countries, adding ancient castles and breathtaking mountains to the world of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

At Gamescom 2021, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Flight Simulator will soon receive a competitive racing mode. The upcoming Reno Air Race mode, which serves as a partnership between the simulation game and the Reno Air Racing Association, will bring the beloved STIHL National Championship Air Races into Microsoft Flight Simulator. Pilots across the planet will be able to take part in these high-speed races, which serve as the game's largest expansion to date. when the update launches in fall 2021.

While planes are typically the focus of Microsoft Flight Simulator, another upcoming expansion to the game will soon add a whole new form of aerial traversal. Developer Asobo Studio recently confirmed that helicopters will be added to Microsoft Flight Simulator in 2022, bringing vastly different controls and flight mechanics to the game. The developer also has plans to continue detailing different parts of the world, with South Korea and Brazil listed as planned areas of focus.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is an extremely impressive simulation, managing to recreate both flight controls and the topography of the entire Earth. While efforts to add detail to different regions are surely appreciated, major updates promises to completely change the game. With competitive multiplayer on the horizon, Microsoft Flight Simulator fans should start practicing now so that their skills are sharp by fall 2021.
