Spider-Man: No Way Home - Why Spidey Fights Doctor Strange

Despite having multiple multiversal Spider-Man villains to worry about, Peter Parker will face off against Doctor Strange at some point in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The first full trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has confirmed that the movie's multiversal conflict will happen due to Peter Parker and Stephen Strange's carelessness when they try to get Spider-Man his secret identity back. Doctor Strange's arrogance leads him to use a dangerous spell against Wong's warnings, and Peter's lack of foresight leads him to screw it up while Strange is casting it.

Although many of the scenes teased in the No Way Home trailer still lack context, it's clear that Doctor Strange will chase Spider-Man at some point in the movie. The trailer features the sorcerer morphing reality the same way Kaecilius did in Doctor Strange, where the villain tapped into the Mirror Dimension to bend New York city to his will. With Strange's sorcery skills much more developed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it will be easy for him to catch Spider-Man — but why are both Avengers clashing in the first place?

Time and again, Strange has learned that every spell has a drawback almost as big as its benefit. For instance, using the Time Stone/Eye of Agamotto allowed him to rewind time and trap Dormammu in a loop, but it also meant Strange had to experience countless gruesome deaths in order to achieve it. While Doctor Strange is in no way obligated to help Peter Parker clear his name, he makes the conscious decision to cast a spell so dangerous that it can open the gateway to alternate dimensions. However, his responsibility to protect reality forces him to find a solution at any cost.

As for why Spider-Man is fleeing Doctor Strange, it's likely that he disagrees with Strange's proposed solution. After all, Peter Parker freaks out as soon as he realizes that the spell that clears people's memories will also affect his loved ones. Considering the naive decisions he made in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's not hard to imagine Peter escaping Doctor Strange so he can fix things his own way — which, as previous movies have demonstrated, is likely to result in even worse consequences.

The huge amount of exciting reveals in the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer overshadow the prospect of Doctor Strange potentially tapping into the Mirror Dimension. Strange and Mordo became disillusioned in The Ancient One precisely because she used its power to grow stronger and cheat death, so Strange committing the same mistake as his master would be a shocking reveal. However, Doctor Strange's reality-bending powers look smoother than the fractal effects the Mirror Dimension is known for. Perhaps he has found a way to harness the same kind of powers without having to sacrifice his integrity this time.
