Sony just revealed that Horizon Zero Dawn is getting a 60fps upgrade on PlayStation 5 during today’s Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live stream, announced alongside the official delay of Horizon Forbidden West. Gamescom’s festivities have included many surprise game announcements, including brand new titles like Marvel Midnight Suns and closer looks at previously announced games Call Of Duty: Vanguard, Halo Infinite, and many more.

2017’s hit PlayStation exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn earned considerable praise thanks to its unique post-apocalyptic setting and deep story, introducing audiences to outcast Aloy. Her quest to uncover the truth about her family and gain acceptance among the Nora Tribe with the help of her information-unlocking Focus device has become a fan favorite among PlayStation exclusives, leading to Guerrilla Games' original IP to become a new fixture at PlayStation Studios. Horizon Zero Dawn was made free through the PlayStation Play at Home initiative as its premier title earlier in the year, and Aloy has since made special guest appearances in titles like Fortnite and Genshin Impact as representative of the Sony brand.

During Gamescom Opening Night Live, PlayStation announced that Horizon Zero Dawn is getting an Enhanced Performance Patch update that will at last allow players to run the game at 60fps on the PlayStation 5. This patch is live right now, meaning that anyone with a copy of Horizon Zero Dawn will be able to download it automatically and play it in 60fps on PS5.

This came alongside Sony's reveal that Horizon Forbidden West is coming on February 18, officially confirming a delay from the game's initial launch window of 2021. In addition to continuing Aloy’s journey across the ruined remains of 31st century San Francisco to find the source of a deadly plague, the sequel will also update climbing and melee combat, add a workbench to craft and upgrade weapons when Aloy is in a settlement, include underwater exploration, and introduce all-new robotic enemies. Horizon Forbidden West's performance and quality modes will give players access to a choice between 4K vistas or smooth 60fps gameplay right off the bat on PS5, as well as improved facial animations to address Horizon Zero Dawn’s notoriously stiff character faces.

Horizon Zero Dawn was already a visually stunning game when it first came out in 2017, and now players will be able to take in the sights of the 31st century wasteland thanks to the newly patched Enhanced Performance Patch update on PS5. Horizon Forbidden West's delay could be worth it in the end; in the meanwhile, players can get a preview of what it will be like to play as Aloy in 60fps starting today.
