Now that James Gunn has wrapped filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Suicide Squad director David Ayer congratulates him in a sweet post.

David Ayer takes to social media to congratulate James Gunn on wrapping production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Both directors share a comic book movie connection, having helmed Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad, respectively, for the DC Extended Universe. Gunn's film was a soft reboot, soft sequel to Ayer's 2016 effort. Since then, Gunn has returned to the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the final film in his colorful cosmic trilogy. It is due for release next year.

When Ayer's Suicide Squad was released in August 2016, it received a strong negative response from critics and audiences for its writing, direction, and editing, but still managed to be a decent box office success. For its standalone sequel The Suicide Squad, released in August 2021, Warner Bros. hired Gunn instead of bringing Ayer back, leading to a more positive reception. Still, it also saw low box office receipts. The two directors brought different interpretations to their adaptations of the Suicide Squad, but have always remained cordial and supportive of each other's visions.

Gunn recently shared he wrapped principal photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Ayer shared some sweet words of support in response. Not only did Ayer congratulate Gunn on wrapping, he also shared his anticipation for the film. Gunn later responded to Ayer's retweet with a heart emoji, thus furthering the wholesome social media moment. See the full post below:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has become one of the most anticipated MCU films in recent years. Not only is it a welcome return for Gunn after being briefly fired by the Walt Disney Company in 2018 due to his old and problematic tweets, but it will be the final film for the titular wisecracking intergalactic team. With Gunn taking on so many different projects for both Marvel and DC, he has garnered a ton of support from his casts, crews, and fans, including Ayer. His Suicide Squad has even received support from the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement, which Gunn has also supported.

While most people have collectively agreed that Gunn's The Suicide Squad is way better than Ayer's original, there have never been any hard feelings between the two directors. By displaying their support for each other on social media, it can be considered a positive example of proper treatment and respect between filmmakers, and hopefully they can inspire fans to do the same. No matter how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 turns out next year, at least Gunn has Ayer in his corner.
