When Thor: Love & Thunder Takes Place In The MCU Timeline

MCU's list of Phase 4 movies is getting bigger with Thor: Love and Thunder, but where exactly does it fit in the MCU timeline? After the first teaser revealed a few of what Taika Waititi has in store for his second Thor movie, the latest Thor: Love and Thunder trailer offered a better look at the God of Thunder's newest adventure – one that could be different from everything he has gone through so far. Thor is far from Earth and no longer doing Avengers' business, which can make it more complicated to rightly place the film in the MCU's chronology of events.

In Thor: Love and Thunder, what seemed like a retirement vacation for Thor that started with a trip aboard the Guardians of the Galaxy ship will quickly get messy. Not only Thor's path will cross with that of Jane Foster now as the wielder of the Mjolnir, but he will also have to face the threat of Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale. The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer also reveals that Thor will be brought in front of Zeus, played by Russell Crowe.

Thor's reunion with Jane Foster, more than making things awkward for the former couple, also offers the best indication of when Thor: Love and Thunder fits in the MCU timeline. Thor claims, with seemingly perfect accuracy, that he and Jane have not seen each other for eight years, seven months, and six days. Although there is no exact date for when Thor and Jane broke up, it most likely happened around the time of Avengers: Age of Ultron's main events. The God of Thunder begins Age of Ultron proudly mentioning that Jane could soon win a Nobel Prize, and finishes the film going in his quest for the Infinity Stones. Therefore, if Thor and Jane's breakup took place in mid-May 2015, that places Thor: Love and Thunder just a couple of months after Avengers: Endgame.

Given how Thor is traveling with the Guardians of the Galaxy just like he was about to do at the end of Endgame, that timeframe perfectly fits. Curiously, that would make Thor: Love and Thunder chronologically one of the earliest-set MCU's Phase 4 installments, even though several movies and TV shows have already been released after Endgame. Even if Thor and Jane broke up later in the timeline, somewhere between Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok, that would still place Thor: Love and Thunder as a relatively early post-Endgame story, although it would make it more difficult to pinpoint when exactly happens compared to other movies such as Shang-chi and the Legend of Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The MCU's timeline has never been more confusing, but the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer at least helps identify roughly when the movie is set in Phase 4's chronology. It has been complicated sorting out the timeframe of events even for Earth-based MCU stories like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Moon Knight, and the timeline for cosmic adventures with no strong connections to other Avengers can get even trickier. That said, Thor: Love and Thunder is set to show what will be of Thor in this new, post-Endgame MCU.
