American Horror Story is finally delivering on its best theme of the season and embracing the Bloody Mary legend – but not for a season-long storyline as expected. After 10 seasons, American Horror Story has already shuffled through many of the best terrifying legends and supernatural beings for its themes, including Ryan Murphy’s oft-used vampires, witches, ghosts, and aliens. As American Horror Story expands its themes, one of the most popular suggestions has been Bloody Mary, which is finally being put to use in the AHS spinoff series, American Horror Stories.

Ahead of American Horror Story season 10, Ryan Murphy put out a poll asking fans to vote on their favorite future season theme. The choices were Bloody Mary, Plague, Sirens, Christmas Horror, AHS’s own Piggy Man legend, and Aliens. While aliens went on to be the theme of American Horror Story: Death Valley, the overwhelming favorites of the poll were Bloody Mary and Sirens, which led many to wonder if they would be utilized as two of the themes in American Horror Story’s confirmed upcoming seasons. American Horror Story season 11 is already entering production without a confirmed theme, but before then, American Horror Stories season 2 will premiere in July 2022.

The series’ spinoff, American Horror Stories, follows a new terrifying legend and theme every episode as compared to AHS’s season-long anthology themes. While the majority of the episodes in American Horror Stories installment 1 received largely negative reviews, the spinoff series allows AHS to tell much more contained tales that may be less suited for a season-long arc. This seems to be how American Horror Story sees the premise of Bloody Mary, as it appears the legend will finally be used in the universe, though in only one episode of American Horror Stories rather than an entire season of AHS.

Why So Many AHS Fans Want A Bloody Mary Season

Bloody Mary is one of the most terrifying folk legends in history, which could properly put the talents of American Horror Story’s actresses to use. As a popular folk legend, there are plenty of different versions of Bloody Mary that have been passed down through generations, and each one has been scaring people of all ages to dare to try it. In one of the most terrifying versions, the Bloody Mary legend says that when someone chants her name repeatedly into a mirror in a dark room, the spirit will appear and murder the speaker. The legend has long been associated with blood, murder, and terror, which is why it appeals to many American Horror Story viewers. Just like the many haunted location themes of American Horror Story, Bloody Mary is a familiar premise that brings audiences’ biggest fears onto the screen, as the odds are that many had tried their own hand at the chant in their youth.

One theory about the origins of the legend is thought to be rooted in the history of Mary I of England, who was nicknamed “Bloody Mary” after burning hundreds of religious dissenters at the stake. More theories about the historical inspirations of Bloody Mary could have served as connections to past American Horror Story seasons, which is one of the most celebrated quirks of the series. Alternate identities for Bloody Mary include Elizabeth Bathory, a 17th-century countess who was accused of vampirism after allegedly torturing 650 women and bathing in their blood. Bathory was also one of the true inspirations for American Horror Story: Hotel’s vampiric Countess Elizabeth, which would make Bloody Mary a fitting connection between seasons. Another possible inspiration for Bloody Mary is a woman who was supposedly burned at the stake for witchcraft, which could be an apt connection to American Horror Story’s witches in Coven. American Horror Story is often celebrated for its highly connective universe, and Bloody Mary as a theme would deliver on continuing these links.

American Horror Stories Season 2 Has A “Bloody Mary” Episode

While it’s unconfirmed that it will be specifically covering the legend, IMDb lists American Horror Stories season 2, episode 5 as “Bloody Mary.” Since the previously teased Christmas horror theme made its way into AHS season 1, episode 4, “The Naughty List,” it seems Ryan Murphy is delegating a few of the popular American Horror Story theme choices to one-episode contained stories instead of full seasons. The other episode titles revealed for American Horror Stories season 2 are “Dollhouse,” “Necro,” “Aura,” “Drive,” and “Facelift,” with the Bloody Mary theme sticking out as perhaps the most terrifying installment. While Ryan Murphy’s tease of Bloody Mary as a theme for American Horror Story suggested that it would be a season-long tale, it seems the tale will only receive one episode in the American Horror Stories spinoff.

Why American Horror Stories Is Better For Bloody Mary Than AHS

While the Bloody Mary legend isn’t being used as expected, the tale is actually much better suited for the American Horror Stories spinoff than an entire season of American Horror Story. Bloody Mary simply doesn’t have enough of a story or expansive tale behind it to fill an entire season, regardless of how terrifying the premise would be. Rather, the Bloody Mary legend’s scary aspects would be utilized better in a contained episode with only a few characters trying to test out the legend. If American Horror Story had a season devoted to various scary folklore legends, then perhaps Bloody Mary could have made its way into the original series with an episode focusing on its background, similar to what Cult did with the stories of Charles Manson and Jim Jones. Otherwise, Bloody Mary’s legend doesn’t necessarily warrant an entire season of American Horror Story, so the best way to get it into the AHS universe is through one episode of American Horror Stories.

Compared to the other themes that Ryan Murphy proposed for an American Horror Story season, Bloody Mary was the most enticing, but likely wouldn’t be able to extend into an entire season. On the other hand, Sirens and Plague, which were the other two most popular choices, could both be spread out across multiple episodes. American Horror Stories may not deliver the same quality of content as American Horror Story, but it still remains the best format for the universe to depict the Bloody Mary legend.
