The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild stunned players when it initially launched with its sprawling beautiful world. While many players have adored exploring the world of Hyrule on their own, many have also often wished for the opportunity to do so with a friend.

While the question of whether Breath of the Wild 2 will have co-op is still up in the air, some fans and modders have taken it upon themselves to add multiplayer where Nintendo didn't. Now, months after an initial challenge, the results of their efforts are on display, and they're getting the community very excited.

Back in November, content creator PointCrow went to the internet with a challenge: create a multiplayer mod for Breath of the Wild that will allow 2-4 players to explore Hyrule together. With a $10,000 bounty on the line, it got the attention of eager fans and potential modders alike, and now PointCrow has shown what's come of the challenge. The content creator took to Twitch to share a six hour stream of what's possible in the new mod. Multiplayer gameplay starts at about 40 minutes in.

The Breath of the Wild multiplayer footage is certain to impress and whet the appetites of fans. Multiple Links in different outfits can be seen running around under the control of PointCrow and his fellow streamers. The Links can see each other, damage one another, and in theory, fight enemies together. However, there is still a considerable amount of progress to be made with regards to fights, as while enemy damage is synchronized for all players, enemy locations are not, so an enemy might flee or become obstructed on one player's screen while the others are still within range of their own.

To be clear, the mod is currently in the works under a team of three, so it's no surprise that progress is being made gradually. Fans will be thrilled to know that PointCrow intends to release the mod for free to the public once it's in a playable state. However, a lot of work needs to be done before that time, and he's yet to commit to a window of release. While a lot of players would probably love to get their hands on it even in the current state, allowing the team at least a few more months to improve upon it will be in everyone's best interests.

Of course, one question that may worry fans is whether or not Nintendo will shut the project down. Since nothing is officially available to the public, it may be safe, at least for the present. However, Nintendo has shown time and time again that it doesn't take kindly to people manipulating its games or even building upon them with fan projects. With any luck, this multiplayer mod will reach completion and fans without getting hit with a cease and desist.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available for the Nintendo Switch.
