Happy 4th Birthday!

Yet another year has passed since Orpheus came to see the bytes of day and we want to take this opportunity to celebrate with you!

We've seen a rough year with a server rather less stable than we'd like it to be. So far we have been able to mitigate it to some extent but an extensive server maintenance around new year will deal with the issues, hopefully for good.

@itismadness and especially @Spine have taken the job of refactoring and rewriting our inherited Gazelle code right to their bones. Lots of simplifications, improvements, lots of bugs and sometimes even bugs! But remember, the biological definition of stable is "dead".

So far, the changes are mostly visible for developers, simplifying how things are laid out and allowing others to start with hacking away at Gazelle easier, without the mind-bending labyrinthine flows of the past.

If you know a bit about PHP, you may be interested in where we came from and where we are now.

Slightly more visible to our users, our team of moderators has spent uncountable hours dedicated to ensuring the quality of our music collection. Over 15000 torrent reports have been handled over the past year.

However, all those development efforts would be in vain without an ever so striving and supportive community, filling our music catalogue, completing metadata, cleaning up messes and helping out each other on the forums.


A Contest

It has been too long since we have had one! This time, it's back to basics with a straight FLAC upload contest. Everybody who uploads even one item will receive a basic allocation of bonus points. And on top of that, you will get a chunk of BP for each and every upload you make. Last time, the numbers worked out to about 20,000 for participating, and 2,000 per upload (on top of the regular BP granted for an upload).

How much that turns out to be depends on how much people contribute to the bonus point pool. If you have more BP than you know how to use, now is the time to splash out!

The beginning of the contest is back-dated to 17th of November, and will run until January 1st 12:00 UTC. Points will be paid out at the end of the contest.

Collaborative collages

These were announced a while back, and a number of people in the lower userclasses were unhappy, because they were not allowed to contribute. This has now been addressed by some subsequent patches so that, if you purchase a Personal Collage, you can contribute to collages.

But what use is that, I hear you say, when I don't have enough bonus points to purchase my first collage? Worry no more, we have an answer for that. Every enabled user has been gifted 2,500 bonus points, which is enough to buy a collage slot.

And just to make it easy, we are having a discount in the Bonus Shop, 40% off until the end of the year! You'll have enough left over to buy some Freeleech tokens as well 


Inactive Torrents

You will likely have noticed that inactive torrents are not being reaped, and have not been for ages.

The reason is that many months ago, the reaper was turned off during a long maintenance window to avoid what baconBits termed "The Robot Uprising". Unseeded torrents would have been wiped out before people had a chance to announce their seeds. (Warm hello to all the bB refugees )

In the meantime, the code was rewritten. Now, prior to an inactive FLAC upload being truly nuked, the uploader and anyone who snatched it will receive a PM that asks if they can revive it. If a snatcher is the first person to announce the seeding of it, they will receive a bonus point reward, equivalent to an upload for reseeding it.

The new code will be launched in the coming days.
