Quentin Tarantino Says He Draws the Line at Killing Animals for Movies

Quentin Tarantino is no fan of filmmakers killing animals and insects for their movies, saying he's "not paying to see real death."

While Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of on-screen violence, he draws a clear line at harming animals — even insects — for his productions. While speaking at Cannes (per Variety), Tarantino addressed the few qualms he has with violence in movies. He noted how he won't so much as harm a fly for a film, referring to how other productions in years past have had animals and insects legitimately killed for the sake of entertainment.

"I have a big thing about killing animals in movies. That’s a bridge I can’t cross,” Tarantino explains. “Insects too. Unless I’m paying to see some bizarro documentary, I’m not paying to see real death. Part of the way that this all works is that it’s all just make-believe. That’s why I can stand the violent scenes, because we’re all just f***ing around.”

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood helmer added, "Some animal, some dog, some llama, some fly, some rat, doesn’t give a f*** about your movie. I’d kill a million rats, but I don’t necessarily want to kill one in a movie or see one killed in a movie, because I’m not paying to see real death... Almost always, it’s not just the violence that I have a problem with. There’s usually an incompetence factor in there.”

Tarantino also spoke about how he has a penchant for disregarding the facts to do whatever he wants with historical figures in his films. We've seen him doing this in different films, notably including Inglourious Basterds, which depicted a bloody end for Adolf Hitler that's not how things went down in real life. Tarantino explained how sometimes when he took this approach, as with Inglorious Basterds, it wasn't planned from the start, but just came about naturally during the scriptwriting process.

“Kurosawa would do this a lot. He would write himself into a corner and tell his writers to get him out,” as Tarantino put it. “I wrote myself into a corner [with Inglorious Basterds] and said, ‘Now what do I do?’ Then all of a sudden, the thought just came to me, ‘Just f***ing kill him. Wait, can I do that? Well yeah, it’s my story.’”

But with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino clarified, "But in the case of Once Upon a Time, I wrote that to save Sharon and kill those motherf***ers."

It's some interesting insight from a man whose movies have collectively left hundreds, if not thousands, of people killed in storyline. As for what's next, Tarantino is intending for his next feature film to be his last. Called The Movie Critic, the film follows a critic who writes for an adult publication in the 1970s. But while that will be his last movie, it doesn't mean Tarantino is going away, as he has teased that he might do some work on the small screen for television shows after his last film.
