I have noticed some sites wanting you to DL using a magnet. in some cases a torrent file is not available.

does anyone know what a magnet is and how to use it?

The short answer is nothing. In fact, it could mean that downloading torrents takes one or two fewer clicks, since all you have to do is click on the link to start the download. When magnet links first came out, not all torrent clients supported them, but now you can use magnet links with just about any semi-popular torrent client out there including your favorites uTorrent, Transmission, and Deluge, among others, so you shouldn't notice a problem with that.

Good read about Magnet Link

Many torrent site use magnet links because the biggest advantage to magnet links is that they are completely anonymous. The links are just a hash and are the same on every page so no one can know if a user actually downloaded a file or not. ;)

A magnet link will do as the name suggests. Suck up all the sources from different trackers to one download. Hopefully, making downloading faster :-)

Magnet just makes your torrent program download the .torrent instead of your browser.

It is still downloaded and stored in someplace on your computer, depending on the program.

But that's pretty much all it does. Opens your torrent program and downloads the .torrent file and starts it for you.

As far as I know it's only a shortcut, a faster way to start downloading from your BT client instead of downloading the file, finding and adding it to your BT client.
