hey guys, i got an issue with my external as you might have seen from a previous topic i was having an issue with win 7, while i was in the process of upgrading i backed everything up on my external and all of a sudden my externall is saying it needs formatting! i've years of work etc on there and i cant really just lose it, whats the best solution to getting it back?

i've tried it on other machines and tried some sort of file recovery but it was just bringing back crap that i know wasn't even on there for some reason.

any ideas?

cheers kenny

Hi! I can think of two solutions:

1. In windows terminal, type:

cd 'YourExternelHDDirectory'

chkdsk /f

You'll maybe need your windows 7 cd( see there http://www.microsoft...k.mspx?mfr=true )

or

2. Use a Linux live cd (ubuntu should works just fine) and recover the data via this OS

Update as of 23/03/10:

The power supply started going funny and i could smell a strange buring smell from it. I took the harddrive out of its casing and put it into another pc as a second hdd. the pc couldnt even regonise it and the strange burning smell is still coming from it.

so i think i'm just going to have to come to terms with the fact its fubar! and it had everything on there that i'd built over the last few years, software, games, music etc, not happy.

just thought i'd let you know and says thanks.

Kind regards

kenny
