Getting started in the scene.

Alright, I'll try to make this tutorial as short but precise as possible. Nobody wants to read novel-long tutorials when it can be done in 5 lines.

So, let's just get started.

Step 1) Preparing for launch:

So, first of all you're going to need a BitTorrent client.

I'd strongly suggest that you use µTorrent for this ( http://www.utorrent.com/ )

Although, some others exist such as Azureus, BitTorrent and etc., but generally µTorrent is the most recognized and recommended client.

Download the client, run the install, and we're good to go, so far, although I recommend changing preferences and port.

Go to the settings in µTorrent (should be easy to find, but since I have the danish version, I forgot the english name of the tab).

Now, you want to run a speedtest and a port-test before changing any of the settings here.

Go to http://www.speedtest.net first, and run it. If your internet connection takes full use of your speed (if you're using a direct connection to the internet box - without router - or you're the only computer on the local network and your router is set up properly) you want to go back into the preferences/settings in µTorrent and change the download rate to around half of your speed in Speedtest.

However, if you do not use the full connection speed for whatever reason, you might want to wait a bit with this part.

Next, we're going to check the port. If you already know that you have a certain port open on your router, change the port to that one, but in case you're unsure, just do a few port scans ( http://www.whatsmyip.org/ports/ ) and find an open one. If you still can't find any open ports, you'll have to open a port. More information can be found on: http://portforward.com/

Alright, now that ports are open, and you've secured a good ratio (by limiting download speed), it's time to move on to step 2.

Step 2) Getting started:

Alright, our first mission here is to register on a somewhat private tracker, possibly with open sign-ups, or if you have a friend who can invite you, that could be a suggestion too. I'd recommend starting off with something simple such as Demonoid.

Register on the site, and go to the torrents section. Now you want to build some ratio. This can either be done through free-leech (some trackers allow you to download specific files without it counting towards your total download amount, but when you seed you get upload credit).

Remember to always make sure that the torrent you download has leechers too! Otherwise you're going to blast the hell out of your ratio within a week!

Another way is cross-seeding, which Wasteman wrote a beautiful tutorial on here.

Read through the rules of the tracker before cross-seeding though, since some trackers disallow cross-seeding.

Should cross-seeding be disallowed, a third way to maintain good ratio is found in my tutorial on part-seeding here.

Now, in case you didn't adjust your download speed earlier, you might want to do it now.

Look at your currently downloading torrents, and estimate the average download and upload rates.

You want to restrict your torrenting client to downloading with only half speed of your upload speed so you'll keep seeding more than you leech. Simply go back into the preferences/settings tab. Now let's say I download with 2mbps and upload with 2mbps, I'll change my download to 1mbps. That way I'll seed 1mbps extra pr second. Which means my ratio will keep improving, and I'll quickly get a buffered account.

Now watch your ratio increase day by day.

When you've reached about a 1,8 ratio with at least 70GB downloaded, you could allow yourself to snitch a torrent here and there (DON'T just download it and delete it from µTorrent. But, you just don't have to worry about how many leechers are on the file).

Step 3) Moving on:

The final thing we want to do, is to try a few different torrent trackers. By this point you'll probably have a nice ratio on Demonoid, so you'll be able to show proof of a good ratio holding, and do now qualify for receiving invites to the more private trackers. Try a few, and find the ones most suitable for your needs. When you've done this, there's not much left for me to say.
