Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game, the 13th installment in the Battlefield series, is a sequel to 2011's Battlefield 3. The game is expected to be released in the Fall of 2013 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Battlefield 4 has also been confirmed as a next-gen console title and will be released on both the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's next generation console.

Gameplay

Battlefield 4 features several improvements on its predecessor. The game's heads-up display is comprised of two sections. The lower left-hand corner features a mini-map and compass for navigation, and a simplified objective notice above it; the lower right includes a compact ammo counter and health meter. New gameplay elements include dual-scoped weapons, target tagging, and use of vehicles

Multiplayer

Battlefield 4 multiplayer has been confirmed by GameStop to acquire new game mode "All Out War! Vehicle Combat" and 3 playable factions: U.S., China and Russia, along with the return of the "Commander Mode" last seen in Battlefield 2142, which gives select players an RTS-like tactical map and the ability to give orders to teammates. In what would be a first for the online series, also heavily rumoured is for female soldiers to make their debut as a playable or selectable soldier within the factions. A greater emphasis on naval combat has also been promised to make a return.

Plot

In Battlefield 4's single-player campaign, the player controls "Recker", a member of a US Special Forces squad callsigned "Tombstone". His teammates include squad leader SSgt. Dunn, second-in-command "Irish", and combat medic "Pac".The Battlefield 4 gameplay reveal trailer features footage from the prologue mission "Fishing in Baku", wherein Tombstone Squad, carrying vital intelligence, escapes from Baku, Azerbaijan with Russian special forces in pursuit.According to the Battlefield website, the campaign takes place in the year 2020.

During extraction, a Russian helicopter fires upon the building Tombstone is on top of, causing their evac chopper to lose control and crash, and Recker and Dunn to be buried in rubble.Irish manages to dig Recker out, but they find Dunn near the burning wreckage, his leg crushed by debris. After Irish hijacks an escape vehicle for the group, Dunn orders Recker to amputate his leg to escape. After doing so, Recker drives his team to a secondary extraction point, but the pursuing Russian attack helicopter complicates matters by nearly forcing Recker out of the moving car.Irish hands him a handheld grenade launcher, which he uses to shoot their pursuers down; the crashing bulk of the helicopter blocks the road, forcing Recker to swerve off the highway and into the ocean. Despite Irish's protests, Dunn orders his squad to leave him behind, handing Recker his magnum to shoot out the windshield.

As the remaining Tombstone members escape the sinking vehicle, a phone conversation is heard between two individuals. One states that Tombstone had successfully retrieved the intelligence: that the Russians involved in the incident are loyal to someone named Admiral Cheng, which was "something [they] already knew", meaning that Dunn's death was pointless. After the main gameplay footage, a glimpse of the series first female soldier named Hanna asks Recker if he can back her up, before clearly showing the Battlefield 4 logo.The trailer hints that the campaign will also occur in China.

Development

Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau confirmed the company's intention to release a sequel during a keynote at the University of California where he said "There is going to be a Battlefield 4".Afterwards, an EA spokesperson told IGN: "Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand – a brand that EA is deeply passionate about and a fan community that EA is committed to." On the eve of Battlefield 3's launch, DICE told Eurogamer it was the Swedish studio's hope that it would one day get the opportunity to make Battlefield 4. "This feels like day one now," executive producer Patrick Bach said. "It's exciting. The whole Frostbite 2 thing has opened up a big landscape ahead of us so we can do whatever we want."

After being poorly received in Battlefield 3, co-op mode has been omitted for Battlefield 4 in order to allow the team to focus on perfecting both the campaign and multiplayer components instead

Marketing

In March 2013, Electronic Arts opened the Battlefield 4 website with three official teasers, entitled "Prepare 4 Battle". Each hints at three kinds of battlespace: air, land and sea.EA then continued to release teaser trailers leading up to the unveiling of Battlefield 4 at the Game Developers Conference on March 26, 2013. The following day, Battlefield 4's first gameplay trailer, which doubled as a showcase for the Frostbite 3 engine was released. Shortly thereafter, EA listed the game for pre-order on Origin for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360; however, EA excluded any mention of the next generation consoles.

In July 2012, Battlefield 4 was announced when EA advertised on their Origin client that those who pre-ordered Medal of Honor: Warfighter would receive early access to the Battlefield 4 beta, this has since been expanded to include any Battlefield 3 Premium owners and Origin users who pre purchase Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe Edition.
