Netflix Picks Up Rhys Darby's Mockumentary Series 'Short Poppies'

The premiere streaming service continues to add new and original content, as Netflix announced today they have picked up Rhys Darby’s mockumentary series, ‘Short Poppies.’

The New Zealand native, best known for his role of Murray Hewitt in ‘Flight of the Concords,’ is creator, writer, and actor on this project set in his home country.

The eight-episode comic series follows a journalist by the name of David Farrier through a small New Zealand town as he meets some particularly odd and compelling figures. In channeling Tatiana Maslany I suppose, Darby will play every single one of these bizarre townspeople. They are described as both “hilarious” and “quirky.”

This is the first foray from Darby into writing and starring in his own work.

In typical Netflix fashion, all the episodes of ‘Short Poppies’ will drop at once on April 3.

The 39-year-old rose to fame internationally for his work on ‘Concords,’ which ran for two seasons on HBO, portraying an ineffectual band manager.

You can see below a short clip featuring a very funny and awkward exchange between one of Darby’s characters, a life guard and leg model named Terry, and an insurance agent played by Stephen Merchant.

Netflix continues to grow their catalog and expand content. Just yesterday they announced an original comedy ‘Grace & Frankie’ coming in 2015 starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.
