Rock band Linkin Park has teamed up with Microsoft for what the company says is the first-ever remixable and interactive music video/video game hybrid. Built using Microsoft's ambitious Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC game-building tool Project Spark, the level "Guilty all the Same" features the band's new song, but that's only the beginning.
Linkin Park says the "Guilty all the Same" level is only a starting template, with users able to create and share their own versions of the level.
"Since I was a kid, I wanted to make games," Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda told Billboard in an interview about the project. Linkin Park's version of the game features a protagonist who is haunted by guilt and travels through a dark environment to escape, but players will be able to do whatever they want with the template.
The idea for the interactive music video came after Linkin Park turntablist Joe Hahn attended E3 last summer and got to see Project Spark first-hand.
"It just blew my mind," Hahn said. "For me, the next step was to see if we could showcase our next song as a game instead of a video."
Some artists might not like the idea of allowing users to re-assemble their creative expression, but Shinoda and Hahn don't see it this way. "Mike and I met at art school, and we understand that once you make a piece of art and put it out there, people will interpret it their own way, and even re-interpret it as something else," Hahn said.
"We've taken our turn, and now it's up to the fans," Shinoda added. "Even if it's silly, as long as it makes me laugh, I don't mind what people do with it."
Project Spark is currently in beta and is available to download for free today for Xbox One and PC. The Xbox 360 version is coming later.
