The Pink Panther will return, but not in the form you might expect.
Coming Soon reports that MGM is developing a new Pink Panther movie. Rather than following Inspector Clouseau's bumbling attempts to recover the Pink Panther jewel, the hybrid CG/live-action film will tell the story of the Pink Panther character, who debuted in the first film's opening credits before spinning off into his own animated series.

The crew behind the upcoming feature includes producer Walter Mirisch, who executive produced the original Pink Panther films and television show, and actress Julie Andrews, whose husband, Blake Edwards, wrote and directed most of the 11 films in the series. David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie) will direct.
"We are incredibly proud to re-introduce the Pink Panther to a brand new generation in such a fresh way," said Jonathan Glickman, president of MGM's motion picture group. "Even more exciting is the chance to work again with our dear friends Walter Mirisch and Julie Andrews, as well as the talented David Silverman, whose enthusiasm convinced us to ‘Think Pink!'"
Mirisch added, "I am proud that the Pink Panther -- both the feature films and the great library of cartoons created by David De Patie and Friz Freleng that sprang from it -- continues to be one of the brightest jewels in the crown of Mirisch films. Now, for the first time, the live action franchise will be united with the world-famous cartoon character in a new hybrid feature film. I am excited by our concept and I look forward to an outstanding movie entertainment."
Andrews also offered a statement, saying that she is "delighted that the legacy of Blake's iconic Pink Panther franchise will continue to grow in its new hybrid form. It is exciting that the quintessential 'next step' for our beloved Panther will be enjoyed by a 4th generation of audiences. I feel that Blake is encouraging us on."
MGM has yet to announce a release date for the project.
