With his successful adult-orientated comedy series Californication coming to an end this year, long-time fans of David Duchovny will be delighted to learn that he is returning to the world of law and order in his next project. Duchovny has been cast as an LAPD Sergeant in the TV series Aquarius, which is based on infamous cult leader and murderer Charles Manson.

Duchovny, 53, first gained a cult following with his recurring role as a cross-dressing FBI agent in David Lynch’s celebrated Twin Peaks TV series. He went on to play an arguably even less conventional FBI Agent – Fox Mulder – in The X Files, the TV series which made him an international star.

Aquarius will see Duchovny play a senior LAPD Sergeant – teamed with a rookie officer – charged with hunting down a small-time criminal who appears to be seducing vulnerable women to join his cult. The small-time criminal turns out to be Charles Manson, a man who would become one of the most infamous and brutal murderers in American history.

No name has been given to Duchovny’s character, but the part he plays is described somewhat enigmatically as a “man with a complex personal life”. No casting details for the other parts have been revealed yet. NBC will screen the series, which has initially been commissioned as having 13 episodes.

Aquarius will, strangely, likely be in competition with another series based on Charles Manson. Controversial novelist Bret Easton Ellis, who gained a level of notoriety from the book American Psycho, is currently working with Fox in America to produce a TV series based on the ‘Manson Murders’.

NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt has said they expect Aquarius to be a big success, saying that Duchovny’s work “always attracts a big audience”. It is a big audience that will have to be patient, however, as the earliest the series will broadcast is at the start of 2015.
