Darren Aronofsky has revealed what stopped him taking the reins on The Wolverine, explaining that it was his personal situation that eventually threw a spanner in the works.

“I loved the script and I thought the film came out great. I just had... it was a hard time in my life,” said Aronofsky to MTV News, before going on to explain he was mid-divorce at the time.

“It was complicated,” he continues. “I couldn't leave New York for that long an amount of time. And, to be honest, the possibility of Noah had started to emerge, and here was something I'd been thinking about for years. I was really excited by that.”

It was also suggested that Aronofsky might take the helm of Batman vs. Superman, and while stopping short of confirming he was offered the gig, the director confirms that it definitely would have interested him…

“Superman's one of the holy grails. It's Superman. It's the best superhero. Batman is great, of course, but it's Superman. He's the same level. That possibility was great.”

That said, he’s also a fan of Snyder, making a point to praise his work on the much-maligned Watchmen adaptation.

“I thought Zack was a great choice,” says Aronofsky, “and I loved his Watchmen movie. I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn't hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it.”

Noah will open in the UK on 4 April 2014.
