Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has revealed that it is ‘hugely interested’ in the Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) headset for PlayStation 4. David Georgeson, development director for the team’s EverQuest franchise, confirmed as much to IGN while speaking about the recent acquisition of Oculus Rift headset makers Oculus VR by Facebook. The studios’ upcoming MMO EverQuest Next has previously been confirmed for PlayStation 4, but was not announced for Project Morpheus support at this time.
EverQuestNext_1“Morpheus is only for PlayStation 4,” Georgeson stated. “So if we’re making a PC product, obviously we’re not embracing Morpheus, unless Sony does some really cool stuff with it.”
Sony has previously stated that Project Morpheus won’t work with PC games. But with a redesign planned before launch and EverQuest falling under the Sony banner, could we see a position exception to that rule, or will we simply have to wait for the title to hit the PS4?
“But I mean, VR and AR are things that I personally am extremely excited about,” Georgeson continued. “I honestly think that’s the future of gaming. But we have a lot of miles to go before we sleep. So we need to build the game, and then we can talk about virtual reality and stuff beyond that.
“I will tell you this though: I’m hugely interested in Project Morpheus. So… we’ll see what happens.”
SOE is also bringing other projects over to PlayStation 4. The developer’s DC Universe Online was a launch title for the system and free-to-play shooter Planetside 2 is also on its way. Could either of these titles see Project Morpheus integration in the future? VRFocus will continue to report on the device’s progress.
