Album features material originally written for the Cure's 2008 album, "4:13 Dream"
The Cure's last studio album, "4:13 Dream," was originally supposed to be a double LP. Only half of that material saw the light of day on the 2008 Geffen release, though now the original project appears to on its way in its entirety.
Last month, the band announced plans to release a new album called "4:14 Scream," which was apparently recorded at the same time as its predecessor. In a blog post yesterday (April 1) on the Cure's official site, frontman Robert Smith expanded on those plans, in all their caps lock glory:
"1)
A LTD EDITION '4:26 DREAM' DOUBLE CD ALBUM OF 26 SONGS (ALL REMIXED) - IE. 'THE ORIGINAL 4:13 DREAM SESSIONS CONCEPT ALBUM' (INCLUDING THE 'INSTRUMENTALS WITH WORDS') - OF WHICH 10 TRACKS OR MORE WILL BE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED…
2)
A LTD EDITION '4:14 SCREAM' SINGLE CD ALBUM OF 14 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED SONGS - ALBEIT SOME OF THEM MAY ALSO BE ON '4:26 DREAM'… BUT THESE '4:14 SCREAM' VERSIONS WILL ALL HAVE WORDS AND VOCALS…"
Smith also shared the album artwork for the new releases:
In a March 30 interview with XFM, Smith expressed unhappiness with the releases, since they were recorded with a different Cure lineup than the one he tours and records with now.
"We're in a weird predicament in that I've finished singing and mixing an album that was made by a band that no longer exists," Smith said. "It's a bit of a sore point, really, to be honest, amongst this current lineup."
The Cure Announces 14th Studio Album, Plans New 'Trilogy' Shows
He revealed that "commercial (and temporal) pressure" limited the Cure to a single album in 2008 and that he finally went back and added words and vocals to the second helping of songs 18 months ago.
However, Smith did mention intent to record new music with the current Cure lineup.
Smith said he probably won't perform these songs live, though the Cure do have some lofty touring plans this year. They've announced a "Trilogy" show, in which they'll play their albums "The Top," "The Head on the Door," and "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" in their entirety. They have also announced plans to release a string of live concert DVDs. So far, they haven't announced any tour dates, aside from headlining Napa, Calif,'s Bottle Rock Festival on May 30.
